  • Small and simple farm site on the Coast to Cathedral cycle route
  • Canterbury, Howlett's Zoo and Wingham Wildlife Park within 15 minutes
  • Half an hour's drive from Dover, Deal and Walmer Castles
Partial to a pedal-powered pilgrimage? The 50-mile Coast to Cathedral route across the Kent Downs between Canterbury and Dover passes right by this fab farm site. Sunnyside Farm Camping is a small and simple affair, on a farm whose family have been tilling the soil and rearing livestock here for generations. Having been farming the Pett Bottom valley so long they’ve got a road named after them, the family running the site know the area like no-one else can, and they’re happy to advise on biking and walking paths nearby. By car, it's a little under five minutes’ drive from here to the hamlet of Pett Bottom, and a 15-minute journey to the ancient cathedral city of Canterbury. After each year’s harvest, a herd of sheep joins the cows, chickens and arable crops here, making for a lively chorus of countryside sounds: when pottering across to collect fresh breakfast eggs from the porch, taking in the views over the Kent Downs, you could be holidaying in Chaucer’s time... (The amenities belong firmly in this era though: clean, basic and bright shared washrooms housed in a wooden farm building.) And if you prefer cantering to cycles and strolls? Pay a call to the riding centre in the village, and trek the chalk hills on horseback for added historical vibes.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very slightly sloping grass field, well draining, with basic facilities in the field and a separate shower room. Rubbish facilities and recycling available also. Privacy easily had where we aren’t all in a row. Owners are lovely and friendly. Really nice part of the world. Perfect place to stay for a few nights.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We loved the simple and clean facilities as well as the ability to select where to pitch. The picnic table was a real asset to us with our 3 young children. Helpful local information in the washroom and seperate cold water sink in field for washing up and drinking water. The washroom was across a quiet lane but as we would have gone with our children anyway, this was not a concern to us. We were a little unsure we were in the right place initially but the owner popped out to reassure us and point us in the direction of the field opposite. At night we had a beautiful view of the blue super-moon and heard nothing but farm animals and birds.

Disliked: Nothing. It was just what we were after!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Small size of campsite and the peaceful countryside location. Ideal for a stop-over near the ferry port, only 30 mins drive away.

Disliked: Only one toilet and shower facility but it was only quiet when we were there so there weren’t any queues.

Local attractions

When you’ve walked, cycled and hacked across Kent, there’s only one option left: make for Canterbury (15 minutes’ drive) and punt or canoe your way down the Stour, stopping off for wanders of the Roman walls and guided Chaucer themed town walks, to finish up in the cathedral. For more adventures in the ancient, the trio of Deal, Walmer and Dover Castles are all half an hour’s drive away and full of sights from times gone by, including a Roman lighthouse, secret World War II tunnels and the Duke of Wellington’s seaside pad. History with a side serving of bells and whistles can be had with a steam ride on the restored Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (40 minutes). Half an hour away, the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve serves up cliffs and saltmarshes, with seal colonies offshore in winter and summer cuckoos and nightingales turning the place into a sound garden. Or visit Britain’s only desert: Dungeness National Nature Reserve (50 minutes) is a landscape loved by waders and migratory birds, made extra picworthy by the looming power station. For more contained encounters with wildlife, try Wingham Wildlife Park, a large collection of small creatures with exotic names such as tamanduas and cloud rats, while bigger beasts including Kent’s only giant anteaters stalk the plains at Howlett’s Zoo; both are half an hour away.
