  • Dog-friendly site in a rural spot between Canterbury and Whitstable
  • A 15-minute drive from the beach and the Crab And Winkle Way
  • Communal firepit available; cycle path to the sea
Glide down to the sea on a bicycle or check out the wildlife trails nearby… a 15-minute drive or 35-minute pedal away from Whitstable's seafront and with Canterbury 15 minutes’ drive in the other direction, Fleets Paddock Camping is nicely set up for a break by the cathedral city with oyster munching, sailing or steering a powerboat on-hand down by the shore. While the sea and city are close by, this dog-friendly and family-friendly site is in quite a rural spot, behind the scenes of Blean village. Backed by a nature reserve, the village is home to a pub with a merry beer garden and local ales, as well as a small food shop where you’ll find it easy to scoop up any forgotten or dwindling supplies. Whether it’s a family getaway, solo escapade or romantic bush hideaway you’ve got in mind, the highlight of the evening may very well be the site’s large communal firepit, which is surrounded by log seats. Those green-fingered folk in the group may also be happy to find that this site is keen to be friendly to the planet and uses composting loos. Other facilities include showers, just in case you've gathered a light layer of sweat while taking the cycle path down to the Whitstable seafront.

Local attractions

Well, the coast is certainly calling here. With a shingle shore, Tankerton beach (15 minutes’ drive) has plenty of opportunities to dip your feet into seaside sport, whether it's swimming or sailing. Boat trips and kayak hire are just some of the hobbies down in Whitstable too… and you'll likely be happy to see seafood restaurants lying in wait for your return to the shore afterwards. Once you’ve ticked off the pebble cove at Herne Bay beach (20 minutes), perhaps you’ll want to turn your attention to the city… there’s a reason Canterbury (15 minutes) is classed a UNESCO World Heritage City, as the cathedral and medieval Canterbury tales attraction are some of its crowning sights. For another historical call-in, there’s the Saxon St Cosmas & St Damian's Church (half an hour) but for wildlife, Druidstone Park’s wildlife park (five minutes) or the sensory Wildart Trail (10 minutes) might be some prime places. As for those of you who aren’t done with your cycling for the day after going all the way to Whitstable, there’s the Crab And Winkle Way (15 minutes) or trails around the Blean Woods National Nature Reserve (20 minutes).

Bell tent (family)

Liked: *The open space and views (depending on where your tent is positioned.) *The bell tent It was clean, with bedside tables and (Portable stove/gas/kettle) picnic basket full of cups plates.) We brought our own so didn’t need to use. *The Beds They were very comfortable. And the duvets kept us cosy and warm. *swings Very quant idea we had a little swing on them nice touch. *tree house I climbed up all be it on a steep ladder-was tricky getting down. But with some updated funiture and functioning fairy lights it could be very quant sitting up there in the evenings. It was our First time staying here, We only stayed for 1 night, but unfortunately will not be returning due to the dislikes. It’s a shame, if some low cost maintenance and attention to detail was invested more into the camp site it could be so much better.

Disliked: * Noise!! We arrived at the campsite at 5pm and at 6pm the loud music began from one of the neighbours ?? We are not sure, we didn’t mind at first but it went on for hours and hours and it was loud, and people shouting it finally stopped at around 1.30am 2am. I appreciate this can not be helped but something to be mind full of that there are houses surrounding the back of the site. *The car park It was situated behind the campsite making it very difficult to unload our belongings, fine if you only have a small bag. We did use the trolleys provided but with the uneven ground it took its toll on my back. There is a locked/closed gate that could be left open for campers to drive into to the site then park in the car park after.(this is what we were expecting as this is what we do at other sites) *The uneven ground I appreciate this can not be helped but it’s some to be mindful of if you have mobility issues. *No meet/greet No staff on site. There are no staff on site, our email indicated a member of the team would be doing the evening checks but we arrived at 5pm and went to bed at 1am and we didn’t hear or see anybody doing checks. Could be a little earey if you were alone in the site luckily we had a few other campers around us. *The toilets Doors need to be repaired/lifted I was waiting to use the loo and could See a man sitting on the loo we both felt a little embarrassed This is an easy job that could save another persons embarrassment. *Lighting The lighting of the campsite at night was a problem, thank fully we brought our portable loo to use, as finding the toilet in the night was a problem along with the uneven ground, some solar fairy lights from the trees to the toilets could be a suggestion so campers have a guide. Esp families with young children. The bell tents, tree house all had fairy lights but unfortunate came on for all of 5 mins, the solar panels were all face down (again small attention to details make all the difference) *Entertainment /equipment There was football goal post that a family with children were using that was broken and the netting ripped/hanging , again easily fixed. A badminton line that was so uneven attached to posts , again easily fixed. We didn’t use these facilities but if I had a young family I would have. We had a look round the gypsy caravan site, the outdoor rattan chairs that were there were terrible all broken and could be unsafe . *Rooms by the toilet I have no idea what purpose these rooms serve ? They have sofas and dining tables but I would not recommend using them they were dirty, it looked like something from a horror film. Again like most of the dislikes most can easily fixed with a bit of tlc and attention to detail.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We loved this site!! My 10 year old girl kept saying how pretty it was. She loved the lights, the hammock swing and the tree house. It was was so peaceful. We've been camping a few times and this was by far the best site we have stayed at. I loved the trees and the views out to the fields. It is well located for Canterbury, North Kent Coast and the Wildart trail.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The relaxed atmosphere of the campsite. The pack of firewood with lighters was good and very easy to light the fire. Love the 2 rooms to use, very useful Saturday morning as it raining all day and the extra bits.

Disliked: Car park, it was small with big cars in. Which I appreciate their is nothing you can do about the size of cars people bring.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Spacious pitch, flushing toilets, good location, lots of quirky parts to keep kids busy; hammock swings, tree house and little walk through bushes.

Disliked: No bins, you have to take rubbish with you and we know it’s to help global footprint but the reality is everyone will have rubbish and when you pack up after a weekend the last thing you want is bags of rubbish to take home! It’s not helping global footprint it’s just putting rubbish elsewhere and saving them money on bin disposal. We didn’t get an email confirmation or any communication from owners, we only met them when our friends called to ask for wood on the last day out of 3. (Not really a dislike just to say it’s very much an unsupervised site).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Amy We’re glad you liked our site! However, we want to clarify a few things: as advertised, we are a no-bin site and do not have a reception on site. Although there isn't anyone there 24/7, we are up at the crack of dawn to clean the facilities, and we take pride in keeping everything very clean! Check-out for our accommodation is at 11 am, and we return to clean and prepare for the next guests. Before they arrive at 3pm , and we also conduct a final sweep at 7 pm during the last check-in time. Additionally, we perform a night check at 10 pm. Please note that Pitch Up advises you to call upon arrival. We do send out automated arrival emails, so we apologize if you didn't receive yours. Thank you for understanding, and we hope you enjoy your stay! Best wishes Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Clean and tidy site. Lovely ambience and really cute aesthetic. Good facilities (including plumbed toilets and showers) Some lovely touches including the communal firepit, swings, treehouse etc. the glamping options (shepards huts and yurts) looked fab. Location was excellent…Whitstable and Canterbury about 10-15 drive away.

Disliked: The paddock grounds were quite uneven. I felt quite unsteady on my feet at times, especially in the night. Lack of sanitary bins. I knew this was a bin free site for ecological reasons, but I hadn’t realised this would apply to sanitary bins which left me in a really uncomfortable position storing used products in my tent overnight. There wasn’t enough parking spaces compared to the number of pitches I counted (21/22 at it’s highest).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your valuable feedback. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed the site’s ambience, facilities, and unique features. Regarding your concerns: - The uneven ground is due to the natural terrain of the field, we do roll the paddock every spring to get rid of as many lumps and bumps as possible including mole hills. This landscape supports local wildlife and plants, which is a core part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. While this does result in some unevenness, - As for the lack of sanitary bins, I understand the concern. As a woman myself, I know that disposing of sanitary items can be managed discreetly with the use of disposal bags. We aim to minimize our environmental footprint, which is why we encourage all guests to take all their waste with them. - In terms of parking, we do provide 26 spaces with additional overflow parking, but we understand that it can be challenging when guests don’t park efficiently. Thank you again for your feedback, and we appreciate your understanding of our approach to preserving the natural environment. Best wishes Alex
