  • Well-maintained, peaceful camping field near Littlebourne in Kent
  • Five minutes’ drive to Howletts Wild Animal Park; 15 to Canterbury
  • Off-grid site with showers; firepits for hire and kindling for sale
With a peaceful, rural setting near Littlebourne in Kent, Cooll Camping offers the best of two words – tranquillity at the pop-up camping field surrounded by mature trees, plus lots of historic sights, shops and pubs as it’s on the outskirts of lovely Canterbury. Communal facilities include a rain-shower shed and a washing-up sink, as well as shared firepit; you can also rent individual firepits and buy logs and kindling so you can grill up a barbecue outside your own tent if you’d rather not do too much mingling. Pick up meat for the grill at the convenient farm shop (five minutes’ drive). If you’d prefer to abandon cooking altogether, you’ll never be short of somewhere to eat and drink, as there are loads of pubs within 10-minutes’ drive. And don’t forget that this is wild camping with no electricity (although ice pack freezing is available to keep your foodie bits and bobs fresh). Bring a torch for getting around after dark. There are two pubs within walking distance of Cooll Camping, including a popular foodie pub with great family facilities only a short walk along the bridleway and a pub 15 minutes' walk away in the village.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Plenty of space, reasonably priced. Basketball hoop, badminton net etc for people to use.

Disliked: Only 2 toilets for over 40 pitches.

From the manager: I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your 3 day stay, had you brought your concerns to us on your first night we would happily have refunded your booking allowing you to choose another site more suited to your needs. Pitch-up clearly states we are a nearly-wild site and show’s photos of the facilities, there were 31 pitches in total and a good number came with their own toilet and shower tents, having read what facilities were available over the busy bank holiday. We had additional toilets and a shower planned for delivery before the busiest weekend of the year however there were delays out of our control and posters to this effect were displayed on the existing facilities.

Great place definitely going back! Friendly staff!

Powered grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The freedom for the children but could always see them. Great to have the games available to use and the endless supply of logs (chargeable)

Disliked: Could be more toilets and shower, however we have our own so didn’t bother us to much.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review and we were very grateful you brought your own facilities as we were unprecedentedly busy over the bank holiday weekend. We do have more toilets on order and have planned an extra shower. Glad you enjoyed your stay 🥰 your family were a pleasure to host.

Powered grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Owner was nice. Well located for visiting Canterbury but...

Disliked: ...site is on a road with heavy 50mph traffic until 9pm at night and Heathrow flight path, and lots of noise until 12pm from neighbouring garden too (hot tub, car engines running, raised voices, security lights coming on and off and lighting up tent). No toilet block as advertised.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your 5 day stay, had you brought your concerns to us on your first night we would happily have refunded your booking allowing you to choose another site more suited to your needs. There are photos of the all site facilities on the listing including the toilet and shower block. The regulations dictate the buildings must not be of a permanent nature, ie bricks and mortar, hence the facilities are in wooden sheds, clearly shown on Pitch-Up The automatic lighting is necessary for safe access around the site, rabbits, wildlife etc often cause these to illuminate unexpectedly. Every evening I do a site walk to check the quiet site rules are being adhered to however after I have retired to bed cannot guarantee compliance, unless a camper txts or call to inform me. I do ask everyone daily if they had experienced any issues and on every occasion you both said everything was fine.

Local attractions

Mmm, where to go and what to do first? If you’re with the kids, Howletts Wild Animal Park is well-worth setting a day aside to see the mountain gorillas and tigers in fairly natural and expansive settings. Wingham Wildlife Park (both five minutes’ drive) offers feeding sessions with parrots and lemurs, and at the Wildwood Trust (15 minutes) you can see wild boar, deer and bears. At Herne Bay (half an hour), families can have good, old-fashioned seaside fun on the pier and in the seaside arcades, or you can take seafront walks through Herne Bay Coastal Park (25 minutes). Energetic types will be happy splashing on the water at Canoe Wild - Fordwich (10 minutes), and anglers should head for Cottington Lakes Fishery (20 minutes) for a day chasing carp. Photogenic Canterbury (15 minutes) deserves your attention too, another big-hitter for families, with the historic cathedral to tour and half-timbered buildings lining cobbled streets packed with indie shops, old-world pubs and restaurants. Look out for the wonky lines of St John Boys House, now a celebrated bookshop.
