  • A stay on a dog-friendly farm site next to a lake with rural surrounds
  • A 10-minute drive from Compton Beach and 20 minutes from The Needles
  • Pub 20 minutes’ walk away, with woodland and beach walks locally
Break up with the city or town centres and touch down next to a lake where specular sunsets are the main visitor. With countryside surrounds and woodland or beach walks a short drive or walk away, Lake on the Farm Camping is just the spot for an Isle of Wight getaway. It’s based on a working arable farm off the road from Newport to Freshwater and 10 minutes’ walk away from Brighstone Forest (none other than the largest forest on the Isle of Wight). Beach paddles? They’re not far off either, with the pretty Compton Beach 10 minutes’ drive away. Chalk cliffs? Get them at The Needles, 20 minutes’ drive away. Farm park visits, theme park rides and falconry displays? They’re all a short drive away too. This place may be small, but it’s mightily big on scenery, being based in the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The sunsets are splendid and the facilities are basic, with a toilet, a tap for drinking water, a fridge, a freezer, and a charging area. Feel free to park and pitch wherever takes your fancy. The site limits pitch numbers to be sure the setting’s quiet. A 20-minute walk away from Lake on the Farm Camping is Winkle Street, a row of cottages hailing from the 18th century in Calbourne. There’s a pub on the way (just 20 minutes’ walk if you want to get there sharp-ish for a pint or a packet of crisps). Should you like a discounted ferry booking, the site can also provide a crossing from Southampton for £65 (that can be requested after you’ve booked). Bring your torches, as there’s no on-site lighting, and remember that the tractors come and go from the farm and there’s a fenced-off lake, so kids must be supervised at all times.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Lovely location, small and pretty, exceptionally clean toilet, good water supply. There is even a fridge and freezer which is handy to have although we didn't use them. The owner was really helpful with booking our ferry tickets, thank you so much for this and for a lovely stay which we extended by two days. We were the only people staying so had the pick of the field, but all sites looked to be good with a slight slope towards the lake in some parts.

Disliked: The only downside is the proximity to a busy road, it was quite noisy all through the night. This wouldn't put me off staying again though.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: A brilliant peaceful site. Great views and being in land close enough to everything on the island. Nice friendly staff....we had a great stay away from the hustle and bustle.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: If you want to pitch 10ft from your neighbour, have lots of screaming children running around. Hundreds of other people and no privacy…then this isn’t for you. This is quiet, peaceful and relaxing.

Local attractions

Kids might be stuck choosing what to get stuck into first at Tapnell Farm Park (five minutes’ drive). With farm-themed barn play areas, a petting zoo and go-karting, they can afford to be choosy. Of course, what’s a visit to the Isle of Wight without seeing The Needles (20 minutes) for the first, second or umpteenth time? Hike over the clifftops, take the easier ride in the cable car or even race out to sea by boat for a unique viewpoint. Tick Blackgang Chine (20 minutes) off your list, a theme park that’s been up and running since 1843. That can be followed up with one of the oldest working water mills in the UK, based in Calbourne (five minutes). Robin Hill (20 minutes) has a falconry centre with bird of prey flights and 88 acres of trails. If sailing’s your thing, Cowes (20 minutes) hosts an annual regatta too.
