Local attractions

People seeking the coast have been coming to the Isle of Wight since the Victorian times. Times may have changed, but its attractions are just as splendid as they were in the olden days… and many have survived since then. It was in Victorian England that Blackgang Chine (15 minutes’ drive), the UK’s oldest theme park, was first built – its rides are still going full steam ahead, although they’re very modernised nowadays. The Isle of Wight also has some really stunning views, of course. St Catherine's Lighthouse (40 minutes’ walk) is quite the vision, set on dramatic cliffs alongside a valley and down. Military Road (from 15 minutes’ drive), built during World War II, is always a lark too, stretching along the west coast towards Blackgang Chine with views of the channel and white cliffs. Don’t miss out on Godshill (15 minutes), whatever you do. The model village is always worth a wander around, along with the medieval church and thatched cottages. There’s a popular farm shop just outside, which has local fruit, meats and cheeses up for grabs.
