  • Small pop-up site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale
Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale pop-up site is just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley. If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland. Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

The Meadow primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This is such a lovely campsite - beautiful scenery, can’t hear anything but the owls and grasshoppers, very peaceful, so much space across several acres and not overcrowded. Perfect off grid camping. Easy to find and a short drive to some great local pubs and villages. The owner was also very helpful and responsive before and during the stay. The cooking equipment provided with the bell tents was really useful and we cooked all our meals over the fire.

Disliked: The shower was a bit cold on one of the mornings but that was to be expected at such a rural spot and we didn’t mind at all. (And The shower was warm on the first day). The fire wood was a little expensive compared to other sites. The beds in the glamping tents were a bit uncomfortable and quite small if you are a tall person.

The Clearing primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great welcome, really good communication and directions. We spent hours wondering in the massive woodlands and chilled on the meadow where we had pitched our tent. Fire wood provided with fire pits so no filled the car with dirty fire pit etc. Showers on site with modern portal ops and a container with decent toilet. Had phone signal and 4G so good for work or family calls. Great location we are definitely staying again. Thanks Tony

Disliked: Nothing to mention at all.

The Meadow primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Woodlands camping is peaceful with lots of walks straight from the tent for dogs. The facilities are basic but well maintained and the site is taken good care of by Jason the manager. The pitches are generous with ample room for a large tent and extras like gazebo. Car parking next to tent is also very convenient. The only reason for four stars was the large mobile home that pulled up very close to us when there was ample other space in the clearing. It changed the ambience of "wild camping" with the TV running which we could hear at night and was exactly what we want into get away from!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, but if you are looking for peace and quiet I would avoid school holidays as site does get very busy!

The Meadow primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice campsite in beautiful surroundings. Toilets and showers were clean

Disliked: There was a lot of wasps and as the site doesn't have anywhere to put general waste, we ended up just having more and more wasps over the weekend.

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail. There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well. The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?
