  • Spacious pop-up site five minutes' drive from Romsey
  • New Forest and Peppa Pig World within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly pitches with no artificial light for great stargazing
Small Trees Campsite is a spacious pop-up site in the Hampshire countryside, about five minutes’ drive from Romsey. The large camping field here is surrounded by a variety of trees, and you can choose to pitch in an open space or a more sheltered spot. Families and dogs are welcome, as well as solo travellers, and dog can be walked nearby on Canada Common. Life on site is all very peaceful – you may well spot kites and buzzards circling overhead, and can finish your day warming up by a firepit, which you can hire on site (on a first come, first served basis); wood is also available to buy. On selected evenings you’ll also be able to buy wood-fired pizzas for an easy evening meal as the sun sets. A water supply and separate male and female toilets are available on site, along with hot showers, but please note that there’s absolutely no artificial light here so you’ll need a torch to find your way around after dark. The trade-off, of course, is that the lack of light pollution often leads to some stunning stargazing on site. As for getting out and about, you can cycle over to the New Forest in about half an hour, or hail a bus from the stop a short walk away for services to Salisbury, Romsey or Peppa Pig World.

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great place to be in nature. Toilets and showers are OK, space to wash dishes and free coffee and tea in the morning. Expectations are very high for the next pitches. And kind farmers.

The Field primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: We had 1 night stay at Small Trees after touring Devon and Dorset. We picked the site as it looked lovely and wild, also near to Southampton Docks to pick family up the next morning- an easy drive. Telephoning the owner a couple of times she was lovely very friendly. Pitching where you like we couldn’t decide as a huge field. We packed everything away so couldn’t have the lovely gesture of free tea and coffee. The only down side is the toilets, they are very compact - another lady came in when I was washing- it was very cramped. The chemical smell does permeate - I have used other chemical toilets that don’t smell as strong.

From the manager: Thanks so much Shelley. Working on the toilets, haven’t quite mastered the product to water ratio! Thanks so much for staying.

Would come again.

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Welcoming family and farm atmosphere. The camp field has clusters of small trees, surrounded by fields with sheep and large oaks. Good site with mixture of wildflower areas and mown mostly level pitches. Good washing up sink although a bit high. Free coffee and tea. Firepits for hire.

Disliked: The toilets are a bit too small and terrible smell from the septic treatment system. Toilet paper is too high for young children to reach.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the review Mark! So pleased you liked it. Good point about the toilet roll location. Will see if we can sort that when we do them up. The chemical smell is a difficult one to manage and every year we’re learning! Thanks for staying.

The Field primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: So lucky to have found this little site! We were visiting Pepper Pig World and it was perfect to return to … quiet and peaceful and lovely safe feeling for young children to enjoy the space and freedom. Very nice addition was the free tea and coffee that was supplied each morning.

Disliked: Basic facilities that did the job! No criticism at all.

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful location. Large field and openness to pick a spot. Friendly welcome. Tea and coffee in the mornings. Shower and toilets. Overall fantastic place and I'd definitely come back.

Disliked: Constructive criticism only here... Yes the toilets were a bit smelly but that's expected with chemical portable toilets. Maybe people should lower their expectations of toilets in what's effectively a field. One of the showers was hit and miss with cycling through hot and cold but I get teething problems with it being newly installed. The showers could do with a little bit on the front to dry and change in. It was a bit awkward to dry and change within the cubicle but totally doable.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks so much Edd and thank you for your comments! We have plans to improve the toilets and definitely have some form of change area for the showers. We made them and didn’t think about that! Doh! Be great to see you next year. All the best.

The Field primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Large flat field with mowed areas, well apart, separated by young tree areas. A pleasant environment.

Disliked: The facilities were not good. Cold water for sinks and washing up sink. The toilets were very smelly which pervaded the surrounding area. One functioning shower with hot water but so small the towel and any clothes would be against the shower curtain!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I’m glad you liked the field! We are sorry we don’t have hot water in the taps, this is our home and temporary pop up site and very new so it’s something we hope we may have in the future. We are only a pop up of 3 weeks and building our facilities up each year. Unfortunately you left the morning the toilets were emptied and cleaned out, the only slot we could get for toilet waste removal that week due to the peak season. Regarding the showers - both self built and we’ve been told they are quite large! They are new for this year and we’ve popped a shower tray behind the curtain so that guests are able to put their belongings there and keep them dry. Again, something we hope we can improve for next year. Thanks so much for staying.
