Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Excellent, peacful, no hassel, no nonsense pitches. A home from home for me. A very good nights sleep.

Disliked: The only slight improvement could be to put a light in the loo, or have a ledge/hook to put your torch on.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful field, lots of space between camp sites, little stream nearby.

Disliked: No instructions or signs on what to do when arrived. Gave them a call and the manager was very friendly and helpful. Shower didn't have any hot water. Event venue close by played loud live music all night, so didn't get much sleep.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Stayed one night only, great location, spacious pitches, fire pits provided, beautiful scenery, open spaces, mainly flat. One shower, one sink, toilet block. Basic but sufficient for short stay. Remember to take your own firewood!

Disliked: Entrance to site could be improved over broken bricks, need improved rules for parking, cars coming and going to pitches throughout evening up to 11pm. Quite noisy, next to pitch playing loud music until 1am! No office or presence of owner.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The site is in a beautiful location, the owner is super friendly. The site layout is great. Although facilities are basic (which is in keeping with the low-key type of campsite) they work just fine. I actually really enjoyed the shower! Despite our experience I do want to emphasise its a really lovely campsite and has great areas for both families and couples etc. It would have been absolutely perfect for us.

Disliked: I think we just got unlucky. All seemed perfect when we pitched up. There must have been a large house in the area hosting a party. We could hear really loud music until 3.30-4am. No idea where it was coming from but it stopped us sleeping. 2nd night a large family pitched up behind us, a few cars, constant loud noise and commotion. No signs of winding down so to avoid another sleepless night we packed up at 11pm and drove home. We have stayed in family campsites before with no issues. We are a bit sad we didn't get our much needed relaxing weekend.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The setting was lovely, a very natural feel. It’s lovely how much space each pitch has and people on the site seem friendly. We heard an owl and saw bats which was wonderful. A great place for a nature lover!

Disliked: As previous reviews note, the toilets let the site down.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful campsite, very relaxed and plenty of space between pitches. The scenery is stunning and I liked that they provided fire pits. Very chilled - just turn up and pick a site and the owner will come around about 7.

Disliked: The toilets are the only thing letting this site down.

Local attractions

Folk who’ve invested in a National Trust membership can surely get their money’s worth out of this area: aim for 18th-century Uppark House (10 minutes’ drive), wander around Woolbeding Gardens (10 minutes) and admire the art collection at Petworth House (half an hour) – tipped to be one of the finest in the NT’s possession. (Or try Hinton Ampner, Slindon Estate, Winkworth Arboretum…) There’s a whole load more history to see down by the coast, too. If it’s maritime times gone by that interest you, head to Portsmouth to potter around the historic dockyard and mosey around the Mary Rose Museum (or, for something more modern, sail up the Emirates Spinnaker Tower to see the sea from 170 metres up). Weald & Downland Living Museum (20 minutes) is a fab place for a glimpse into real life from days of yore. If you’re simply planning to fill your break with lots of rural rambles, perhaps it’s a wise idea to lay in supplies for a restorative drink upon your return? Langham Brewery (20 minutes) is worth a visit for a tour of the steam-powered brewery, and there are local vinos to pick up at Trotton Estate (10 minutes) and Upperton Vineyards (20 minutes).
