  • Luxurious adults-only shepherd’s hut in the New Forest National Park
  • National Motor Museum, Beaulieu and Palace House 15 minutes’ drive
  • Private sauna and shower room; five minutes’ drive from Brockenhurst
Tucked into its own secret garden five minutes’ drive from lively Brockenhurst in the New Forest National Park, Whistlestop is a hand-crafted shepherd’s hut that’s just the ticket as a luxurious, adults-only base for exploring the Hampshire countryside. Whistlestop certainly pulls out all the stops to make your stay feel very special; inside the main cabin – made to a tip-top spec – is a log burner, a natty kitchen corner with all mod cons and a dining area just for two. At the end of the day, you can turn in to a proper double bed (all linens supplied) with a good book or indulge in a Netflix-a-thon with your favourite series on the flatscreen TV. Alongside – five steps away in fact – your top-notch sleeping and living quarters, there’s a swanky private shower room, plus an infrared sauna outside in the exclusive-use garden, which also has picnic seating and a firepit – you certainly won’t be doing much roughing it here. There’s parking right outside your cosy sanctuary and EV charging at a cost. The railway line runs alongside Whistlestop’s garden, so you may hear trains between 6am and 11pm. If you’d rather leave the car behind on your New Forest jaunt, Brockenhurst station is about 10 minutes’ walk away.

Local attractions

With bike-hire shops (guests get a discount at Cyclexperience Bike Hire and Bike Sales) and riding stables within five minutes’ drive, there’s no excuse for swerving the leafy cycling tracks and bridleways of the New Forest National Park. However you’d prefer to explore the park, your hosts have a wealth of information on walks, hacks and biking tracks nearby. On your travels you may be lucky enough to see semi-wild New Forest ponies grazing on the grassy commons, but if you’d like to see some more indigenous animals, red deer range freely at New Forest Wildlife Park (20 minutes’ drive), which is also home to playful otters and pine martens. There’s a fine collection of futuristic racing cars, vintage marques and buses at National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (15 minutes), and if you’d like to introduce little culture into the mix, you can tour the ornate interiors, restored Victorian-era kitchens and topiary gardens at 16th-century Palace House (15 minutes).
