  • Family-friendly wild camping field in the village of St Mary Bourne
  • On the Test Way footpath and a 35-minute drive from Stonehenge
  • Firepits welcome; walk to the village shop, pubs and a PYO fruit farm
Countryside walks, open fires and sublime views? What a trio - and they're some of the staples at Spring Hill Wild Camping. This is a fine spot for wild camping and those seeking a low-impact, eco-friendly site. It’s also in Bourne Valley in the Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – hence the scenery – and alongside the 44-mile-long Test Way footpath for guests who fancy sauntering across the chalk downs and along riversides. Get yourself a good meal first, perhaps at one of two local pubs (10 or 15 minutes' walk). The pretty Hampshire village of St Mary Bourne, where this site is located, has a well-stocked village shop (10 minutes’ walk) and a pick-your-own fruit farm with play areas and a café for more fresh eats and punnets of berries to whisk back to your grassy plot. Because of those eco, low-impact goals, the site only has the basic necessities. There are well-maintained toilets and clean running water, but if you’re looking for hot showers and a pool, you should look elsewhere. Here, it’s all about multicoloured sunsets over the surrounding fields, evenings cooking sausages over the fire and lots of walks in the countryside. Come prepared with your bikes if you wish, because there are bike rides all over the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including pedals along chalk plains, country lanes and a few hill climbs such as Walbury Hill (20 minutes’ drive). For keen anglers, there are places set down locally, such as the Bourne Rivulet (20 minutes’ walk). Further out, the iconic Stonehenge circle is just 35 minutes’ drive away, so you’ll be well based for ticking it off your bucket list.

Local attractions

What a handy location this is, 45 minutes’ drive from the New Forest National Park for outdoor activities like archery and canoeing and 25 minutes’ drive from walks in the South Downs National Park. On the edge of the South Downs, Jane Austen's House (25 minutes) has been turned into a living museum dedicated to the author’s life in the 17th-century cottage. Back the Wessex Downs, it’s not all about hiking and cycling, as lovely as these may be (especially over the chalk ridge of the long-distance path The Ridgeway, approximately 40 minutes' drive). At Highclere Castle (15 minutes), you’ll get to wander rooms used as the setting for Downtown Abbey and peer around the old cellars. Avebury (50 minutes) is also home to Europe’s largest Neolithic stone circle. If you have time, stop by in Basingstoke (half an hour), where there’s a museum with antique cars and an old candy store, as well as a local gallery and a Tudor mansion.
