Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: We all enjoyed seeing & feeding the animals in the farm and it was great having the sheep & goats wandering around the campsite (& trying their luck at stealing our food!). Campfires in the evening really make a camping trip for us. There were plenty of spots for setting up a ground fire.

Disliked: The lack of running hot water and cleanliness of the facilities were certainly a draw back, but aligned with our expectations from the description.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The farm and animals were lovely, really friendly and the experiences of bottle feeding and holding them is perfect for children and adults that love animals. Good food hut with reasonable prices. The camping field itself was ok, quite a few stinging nettles near to where you pitch the tent in places. Good sizes pitches. Brilliant for looking at the stars at night, and watching the planes fly over. Overall we had a lovely time and the kids really enjoyed it.

Disliked: The stinging nettles in camping field as it’s hard navigating with young kids. Shower and toilets could use updating to be honest BUT they are usable and it is on a working farm so understandable. Not as dirty as some reviews make out. I did use our own toilet so if you have one take it.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Booked for the second year running for 2 nights camping. The real selling point is access to the animal park. Don’t expect luxury camping, because it isn’t, but nor does it claim to be. The pitches aren’t allocated, don’t have electricity and there are two toilets and a basic shower. Despite this, the only time we queued for the toilet was when it was being cleaned. There aren’t washing up facilities as such, but there are taps that can be used. The “pitches” themselves are pleasant, right next to animal enclosures, with some sheep and goats free roaming around the site, which is great! There is loads to do for children, including feeding, stroking, milking and holding the animals. Animals include sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs and a rhea! There are play areas and a “train” ride (£2 pp). This is a great place to camp if you have young kids who want to get hands on with animals. They can play in the park areas for hours. Cannot fault what you get for the price and I look forward to coming next year!

Disliked: Camping facilities are basic with no electricity and the shower is basic. BUT, that’s all part of the charm! It’s rough and ready and doesn’t pretend not to be. If you are prepared then it’s not an issue at all!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The farm was really fun! Having the animals wandering around the campsite was strange to start with but we soon got used to it

Disliked: The toilets were very basic and only 2 in the actual campsite and only one shower. They were not partially clean but I understand it's hard to maintain those along with maintaining the animals on the farm too. Also, it is very close to London Stansted Airport which was noisy at night.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Great quiet stay at Daisy Mays Farm, my son enjoyed seeing the animals and mentions them regularly! Went knowing what to expect with facilities, we liked the off-grid feel for a short break. Staff all friendly and answered questions, were great with kids and the animals. Location ideal for where we needed to be. Enjoyed planes being so close by. Thanks!

Local attractions

If your kids are demanding yet more animal encounters, spend the day admiring the big cats, penguins and rare red pandas at Paradise Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), where there’s also a dinosaur-themed woodland trail. Alternatively, head for Colchester Zoo (50 minutes) to spend time shadowing the keepers. Once you prise the kids away from the wildlife, let them loose on the adventure golf at Golf World Stansted (five minutes) while you practise your swing on the driving range or play a round on the nine-hole parkland course. Still outdoors, take forest walks through centuries-old trees at National Trust - Hatfield Forest (15 minutes), or have a stroll around ornamental ponds at The Gardens of Easton Lodge (20 minutes), with a layout dating from the Tudor era. There’s more local heritage to be discovered at Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village (five minutes), where you can tour a reconstructed medieval farming settlement and castle. Keen to learn more about World War II? Have a meander around the extensive collection of fighter planes at IWM Duxford (half an hour).
