  • Small pop-up campsite on pony fields in peaceful Essex countryside
  • A 30-minute drive to Dedham Vale and 40 minutes to the beach
  • Grass pitches located on the Essex Way, close to shops and pubs
Now this is one for all those long-distance walkers among us – perhaps the name gives it away. Ramblers Stables is an exclusive, pop-up site on fields grazed by ponies in winter – and the Essex Way between Harwich and Epping goes right past the gate to the site. This is a smashing overnight stop whether you’re walking the whole route or just sections; there’s no need to worry about leaving the car as you can easily get here on public transport. Colchester station is only five minutes away by taxi, and bus services stop at the end of the lane. The camping field has a peaceful setting – with abundant birdsong – yet it’s less than a 20-minute walk to West Bergholt, with several pubs and convenience stores where you can pick up supplies for the barbecue (bring all your own gear). On-site facilities include a loo, hand basin and shower in the wetroom, as well as washing-up facilities in the stable yard, where you’ll also find electric points – you’ll need to bring a long extension lead with you to get power on your pitch. Secure under-cover parking is on hand for motorbikes too. The owners run another farm nearby, which is the site of an ancient monument featuring earthworks and ramparts from an Iron Age hill fort – if you’re curious, they’ll happily organise a visit for you. And art lovers, bring a sketch pad as you’re only a 30-minute drive from leafy Dedham Vale, the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Constable Country.

Route directions

This property can be tricky to find so it's best to follow the instructions below. Proceed down Armoury Road, then keep going when it becomes a private road (by the horses warning sign). Go past the horse paddocks until you come to the menage (black sand area) and turn left (signed public footpath), keeping the menage on your left. Go to the silver gate along the track.

Local attractions

Colchester (10 minutes’ drive) has seen some action over centuries. It was the capital of Roman Britain, and bits of Roman wall are still standing. The Norman-era Colchester Castle is built over a Roman temple and you can tour the original vaults, and there are even a couple of buildings with gunshot holes from the English Civil War. The kids may well clamour for the beach, so pile in the car and head for Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze (both 50 minutes), or the Blue Flag beach at Dovercourt (40 minutes). Clacton-on-Sea (45 minutes) also has a pier lined with helter skelters and old-fashioned amusement arcades to keep everybody happy. Colchester Zoo (15 minutes) has Big Five animals as well as rarer species like sun bears and spider monkeys, plus keeper talks to entrance the kids. Afterwards they can fill up on good old jam sarnies at Tiptree Tea Room, Museum and Jam Shop (30 minutes).
