  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk from a sandy beach
  • Within a half-hour drive of Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze
  • Miniature golf, indoor play, bar and clubhouse entertainment
You can’t (sadly) guarantee good weather for your UK holiday, but you can certainly give yourself some decent odds by escaping to the area known as the Essex Sunshine Coast – (so called because records show it to be one of the driest corners of the country). Should the sun indeed put in an appearance, you’ll be in prime position to make the most of it at Dovercourt Holiday Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the town of Harwich. From here it’s a quiet 10-minute stroll along a footpath to the nearest sandy stretch (or a five-minute drive to the town beach if you’re carrying a whole pile of clobber). Beach seekers can tick off several more sandy stretches easily enough too – Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze are among the other resorts reached with a half-hour drive. Even if the days are damp there’s plenty to do back at base, where the clever owners have installed an amusement arcade, all-weather sports court and an indoor adventure playground with ball pit. A miniature golf course is on site for fine days. Evenings on site can be whiled away taking in the family entertainment over eats and drinks in the clubhouse. If the sunny weather’s inspired you to bring out the barbecue, that’s fine too – pick up essentials in the small on-site shop or hit the supermarket aisles in Harwich.

Local attractions

Heading into Harwich? Hang around to roam around Redoubt Fort (a circular seaside lookout built in the early 19th century and still with some of its original cannons), check out life below deck on Lightvessel LV18 or take in a film in one of the UK’s oldest cinemas. If it’s traditional entertainment you’re after, both Walton-on-the-Naze (25 minutes’ drive) and Clacton-on-Sea (half an hour) have proper pleasure piers along with their beaches (and fish and chips to have on the sands). Set up way earlier than either is Colchester (35 minutes), the oldest recorded town in Britain and now home to both Roman ruins and a Norman castle (plus a zoo and trampoline park if the history stuff doesn’t grab you). To see some of the area’s native species, head to Hamford Water National Nature Reserve (35 minutes) or the Essex Wildlife Trust’s bird and butterfly sanctuary Fingringhoe Wick (45 minutes). A fab collection of farm animals and a wildlife park are at Jimmy’s Farm (35 minutes). If you’ve more of an eye for aesthetic pleasures, make a beeline for Beth Chatto Gardens (25 minutes) or Flatford (half an hour), the National Trust site that inspired many a painting for John Constable.

Camping pod

Liked: The swimming pool with the indoor slide was great. The beach was lovely as some sections are really quiet and peaceful which was nice with having a 4 year old with high functioning autism. The cabin itself was clean and cosy with 4 plug sockets so that was great.

Disliked: Park was okay, not great for an autistic child with global developmental delay, unfortunately someone of my child’s age can not use monkey bars and slides are his favourite thing! So he had to be carried onto the slide, my child being mine didn’t want to use the Baby slide available, due to him being 4, but with the mindset of a one year old. Ide have also said it would have been more suited for two adults, it semt to have a very loud night life. Our first night/day was ruined, we had struggled getting our lad to sleep and our neighbours decided to get drunk and coked off there heads and caused absolute havoc on the campsite, screaming, shouting, sounded very violent, I also have video footage of what we had to deal with, laying on eachother in the middle of the road with screams of get off me. This woke our child up unfortunately (which we had to take for a drive prior to get him to sleep)! That took a good hour, to then get back, all got in bed for about 10pm for that to go on! This woke our child up, who then wouldn’t go back to sleep, we all felt like total rubbish the next day through lack of sleep which kind of wasted the day away. The police then arrived the next day, and we heard the officer say he may be coming back tonight, but I can’t promise, this then created anxiety on someone who already suffers as I thought great, were in for the same tonight! Thankfully when we got back that evening after escaping(there garden was trashed, lighters and bottles everywhere, not appealing for a child) they had gone, so we were able to enjoy the last couple of nights. But personally I would say it’s more an adult suited site due to the nightlife. Obviously we have only stayed once, maybe we just got unlucky, however, from a short stay, that’s my opinion.

Camping pod

Liked: The pod was lovely and most of the staff were also very nice and professional. The bathrooms were clean.

Disliked: Unfortunately there was a lot of dogs off leads with no regard for others safety. The entertainment restaurant was disappointing the food was very expensive and the wait staff were rude the meal it self was not to a acceptable standard, we only ate there once,

Camping pod

Liked: Good activities for kids to do, nice park overall. Bingo for the adults was good fun with big prizes.

Disliked: Food was quite limited and expensive. They could really do with having an ATM on site as the change machine kept breaking and every game and bingo was cash only. You have to drive to a cash point.

Camping pod

Liked: Basic but very good pod, excellent insulation, so warm and quiet. Couple of electrical sockets with usb. Beds were comfortable, toilet facilities very close and restaurant good. Swimming pool excellent, clean and modern, looks like it was a recent addition to the site.

Disliked: Lack of lighting around whole site, and lack of exit signs. No running water for camping pods (told they had to turn off the water as kids kept turning them on and were flooding the site) and unsure if dishwasher area water was drinking safe. Toilets were basic, women’s were okay but male toilets were very dirty. Had to pay extra for WiFi near our pod, which you have to keep checking your device is still connected to it.
