  • Rural camping on a working cattle and arable farm in Essex
  • Five minutes' drive to the edge of Dedham Vale; Colchester 10 minutes
  • On the Essex Way walking route; animal visits with the farmer
Woodhouse Farm is a laidback site in the Essex countryside conveniently located around 10 minutes' drive from the centre of Colchester. Whether you're here to visit the Roman capital of Britain, fancy heading to the serene green landscapes of Dedham Vale (from five minutes) or are after days along the coast (roughly 25 minutes), this low-key spot is in a prime location for it all. The site has access to the Essex Way walking route and is home to a scheduled monument in the form of earthworks from an Iron Age hillfort that guests are welcome to visit. The site managers are also happy for guests to go and meet the animals, but please make sure that you arrange a time to go with the farmer for everybody's safety and convenience. This spacious site has its main pitching area near a lake, so for safety reasons managers will try to place groups with young children further away from the water and those with adults and older kids closer by – just let them know which is best for you when booking. There are also some wild-style pitches dotted around the farm which may be available depending on the time of year and harvest (these are further away from the facilities, so please ensure you select the pitch you require). The farm is about a mile from the village of Great Horkesley, where local amenities include a pub and post office.

Petite primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Excellent place. We were in a tent and friends in a caravan. Tanya who runs the place couldnt do enough for us, she was lovely, always checking everything was ok. When the ground was too hard for pegs to go in due to the drought she fetch a spike to help solve the problem. Toilets and showers were spotless. We plan on coming to the area again, and this is the place for us to stay in future. We couldnt fault anything at all. Paul, Sharon, Mark Louise.

Disliked: Nothing at all to dislike. Great place

Farmyard powered grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Beautiful scenery Run by very nice and friendly people. Lots amenities, pubs, restaurants, shops, take-aways all relatively local. Lovely walks Very dog friendly.

Disliked: Not a moan. They are trying their best and are developing the site as they go. But the toilets and showers are a little primitive although spotlessly clean. In fact amazingly clean, considering the farmyard location.
