Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: There was a lock on the gate to the field and we were given a code just prior to our stay, so it felt very safe and secure leaving our vehicle and possessions

Disliked: Grass was quite long and the small field was on a slight slope, there was one portaloo toilet and a outside sink, we knew this beforehand and it didn’t put us off, but didn’t really like using the toilet with all the creepy crawlies inside

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Guest, The toilet is cleaned every day, but unfortunately, 'creepy crawlies' come as part of the package, in the countryside! I can only suggest hotels in future, to avoid this issue🙂 Kind regards

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Easy access. No faffing about. Pitch level and ready with electricity and water was nearby. 5 mins to park up and off out. Toilet and wash facilities available which is bonus for a CL

Disliked: Basic but very sound value

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Stayed with friends and pitched together. Site very well looked after, friendly site owners and directions and gate code were all provided before arrival. Toilet was clean and tidy and outside sink was too. Lovely waking up to birds singing and the owner of her 3 horses walking past our tent taking them back to have their breakfast. This site has all basic necessities and is a no frills campsite, we enjoyed our stay.

Disliked: We were situated on a fairly steep hill but knew this from Description.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks Martine. It does sound as though you are in an aviary, sometimes, with all of the local birdlife we have out here! Kind regards

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Great communication from Anthony the host. Basic but very pleasantly surprising facilities- the toilet looked like a portaloo from the outside but was a proper toilet and very clean!

Disliked: Noise from the nearby road during commuting time. We were sleeping in the pop up roof which is like a tent so it’s probably not so noticeable in a caravan or motor home. Was OK during the night.

From the manager: Many thanks for the comments, Rachel. Kind regards

Hilltop shepherd's hut

Liked: Friendly hosts Bottle of Prosecco on arrival due to a possible miscommunication with website. Firewood delivered as needed during our stay. Beautiful views and horses nearby.

Disliked: Quite a long walk had me a bit breathless but I do have health condition. There was some creaking that affected me but I am a very light sleeper and obviously it’s a shepherds hut and you can realise that it will probably do that and will be a hard thing to eliminate. I managed to sleep a bit. my partner slept soundly and doesn’t have the same complaint. sleeping is his superpower however that’s just my opinion once again LOL

From the manager: Many thanks for your comments, Cristina! Kind regards

Local attractions

The maritime town of Maldon (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start your tour of the area – perhaps with a stroll along Hythe Quay to see one of the UK’s largest collections of London barges. You can also launch canoes or hire bikes here, or join boat trips out onto the Blackwater Estuary. Just outside the town, the Museum of Power is worth a visit to see the miniature railway and working steam pump. For more watery activities, head to Hoe Mill lock (10 minutes), a well-known local wild swimming spot, or the historic harbour at Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes). The Dengie National Nature Reserve (half an hour) is a good place to be if you’re into your birdwatching. Gardens more your thing? RHS Garden Hyde Hall (15 minutes) is the big draw nearby, with several themed areas keeping things interesting all year round. The three acres at Beeleigh Abbey Gardens (10 minutes) are also worth exploring, or you can try the trails of Danbury Country Park (also 10 minutes) if you’d like to see something wilder.
