  • Pop-up meadow camping on an East Sussex working farm with rural views
  • A five-minute drive to Bodiam Castle; 35 minutes to Camber Sands beach
  • Country walks from site; foodie pub and farm shop a 10-minute drive
In need of some down time? Chances are you’ll find it at Eyelid Farm, a peaceful, pop-up campsite on a working farm near Bodiam in East Sussex. With only a handful of spacious pitches available, the camping field is set on a sheltered field with nothing more than the occasional herd of deer to disturb you. OK, so this is true wild camping, where you’re left pretty much to your own devices. Feel free to pick your own pitch and don’t forget that well-behaved dogs are allowed to come on your mini-break too. Facilities may be minimal, but toilet facilities and a standpipe with fresh water are available. You can buy logs and kindling at the site, and also hire a firepit for barbecues. From your pitch, it’s a 50-minute walk through fields and woodland to a farm shop in Salehurst for local produce to cook up on the grill, or if you’re sworn off cooking, there’s a dog-friendly foodie pub (it’s best to book in advance) close by, with a leafy terrace and gorgeous views of surrounding fields. Oh – and finally, a couple of house rules. The owners do ask that you keep noise to a minimum between 10.30pm and 8am, so everyone can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: What an absolute gem of a place. Only here for one night; loved the size of the field and the fact you could pick your known pitch with plenty of room. The loos/shower were first class - the best we’ve ever had. We live local and have started to just go off for one night over a weekend in our van as much as we can. We will most definitely be back. Had a wonderful stay as did our dogs. Thank you

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The site is very peaceful, there is a little road noise but if you pitch up the top end you do not notice it. Excellent toilets and shower. Great little washing up area. Owners are lovely and very helpful and are looking to constantly improve the facilities. Will be staying again.

Disliked: No hot water at washing up station but this didn't bother us. Unfortunately some guests didn't leave the showering and toilet facilities as they would have liked to find them and we had to have a clean and wipe down before use. Could do with a more powerful extractor in the shower area as it gets a bit steamy during use. Note that the field is on a gentle slope so you need to consider how you pitch your tent.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Quiet and spacious location. The field is surrounded by trees so you have shade all along. The bottom of the slope was a bit wet and I recommend, since space is not an issue, to pitch up a good 15-20 meters away from the fence. Also, at the bottom of the slope there is no mobile signal...might be a positive though!. The toilets were fantastic, well kept and new. 10 minutes away from bodiam Castle and 20 min away from Battle Abbey. Good location

Disliked: We liked everything, exactly as described. Thinking about improvements I would suggest solar panels in the shed by the toilets and a communal fridge, kettle and charging station.

Local attractions

There are some smashing walks (with a smattering of history thrown in) close to base camp. Download a self-guided tour of the grounds of moated, National Trust-owned Bodiam Castle (five minutes’ drive), while Scotney Castle (30 minutes, also National Trust) offers looped walks through woodland as well as romantic, lakeside ruins. To nose around glorious gardens, head for Great Dixter House and Gardens (15 minutes) or Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (25 minutes). After all that high-brow stuff, it’s time for the kids to have some fun. Treat them to a ride on a steam train along the Kent and East Sussex Railway (25 minutes), or let them loose on the ziplines and rope courses at Go Ape Bedgebury (20 minutes). If splashing around in the waves is more your style, pack up the car and head for the coast for old-fashioned family fun on the beach. Camber Sands (35 minutes) has got plenty of dunes for the kids to run around on, and lots of chances to make towering sandcastles – it’s also a top-notch spot for windsurfing.
