  • Pop-up meadow camping overlooking Bodiam Castle in rural East Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive to Sissinghurst Castle Garden and Go Ape Bedgebury
  • Wildlife on site; easy walk to pubs; stately homes and beaches nearby
Damson Field Rustic Camping is a small and peaceful pop-up site set in a 10-acre field in East Sussex countryside, overlooking Bodiam Castle and near the village of Ewhurst Green. The vibe here is very much all about nature, so you can camp among fruit trees and relish the wildlife and seclusion. Owners Terry and Lynda (ably assisted by the ever-smiling Nathan) welcome you to cosy up around the campfire, light the barbecue, toast marshmallows or simply chill with a book. If you take a stroll around the ancient orchard at sunset, you might be lucky enough to spot badgers, deer and pheasants, and after dark you can watch the stars glittering in the night sky. There are a handful of traditional pubs in Bodiam village (20 minutes’ walk, no need to take the car) if you feel like upping the pace. As this is wild camping, there is no electricity but separate portable toilets and a standpipe with fresh water are available. Showers are available for an extra charge. Kindling and firelighters are provided for a small charge, and you can borrow firepits on site. A few site rules: no ball games outside the designated play area, please, and noise is to be kept to an absolute minimum between 11pm and 8am to allow all guests to get a well-earned night’s sleep. The owners ask that you take all your rubbish home with you too.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: We liked the wonderful views across the valley and of Bodiam Castle. It was peaceful and had a very relaxed vibe. Terry and Nathan were friendly and wanted to make sure we had a great stay. Also a great location for walks and Terry has done a lot to attract wildlife onto the site.

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: - Back to basics natural campsite with great views - Really friendly hosts - Easy to get to local attractions - Easy setup with car next to tent - No strict rules or regulations

Disliked: - Noisy neighbours till past midnight, would be good to have a walkthrough by the owner to get loud people to keep it down - Showers unfortunately stopped working - No waste disposal point

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Warmest welcome and personal attention by the hosts, and we got a spot with a terrific view. All pitches are nicely spaced. It was lovely

Disliked: If I was being nit picking I’d say I prefer compost loos to portaloos …but it really is not picking. The facilities were clean, and that’s the most important thing

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite with great views and well spaced pitches allowing for some privacy and peace. Terry and his colleague were very friendly and hospitable. Toilets were clean. My first experience at a rustic fairly basic campsite with less facilities and actually it was wonderful to just pitch up and enjoy the space. We wished we had more time there. Thank you and will be visiting again for sure.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Our second stay within a month, as previously we were greeted by the site's friendly hosts, they even reserved a pitch near where we stayed a few weeks earlier. It's nice campsite to go to enjoying the peace and quiet away from our usual city life without sirens and traffic noise. Set on a hill it has an amazing view, we can actually see Bodiam Caste from our pitch. There are walks nearby to go to a nearby town Staplecross for some basic food shop. And of course, a nice walk to Bodiam Castle. Definitely one to add to our favourites list to go back to :)

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: What a lovely campsite! So very peaceful and really well thought out by Terry to make the most of the lovely countryside with lovely spaced out pitches. We enjoyed the most relaxing weekend, all of the campers were super respectful, there to enjoy the surroundings and get a dose of the great outdoors. Shower was £1 a go and lovely and warm too. If you want to go the the White Dog Inn up the road i would recommend booking a few days ahead as it was fully booked both evenings, we popped in for a drink and the food looked amazing so hope we'll have better luck next time. We will certainly be back next year!
