  • Access to the traffic-free Cuckoo Trail at the bottom of the farm
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed
Set up for stays of all sorts… friendly family-run Fontmills Farm Campsite in the Low Weald of East Sussex between Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells welcomes all sorts guests, from weary city dwellers seeking a countryside break to active types looking for adrenalised family hols. Whatever flavour of holidaymaker you are, pitching up here will have you within easy access to countryside trails and cycling along the tree-lined Cuckoo Trail, wandering the local coastline and villages, and visiting local sights including Seven Sisters Country Park, Beachy Head… and some of Sussex’s best-known pubs. Pitches at the farm are on grass, in a spacious field with plenty of room for running around. There are toilets, showers, a washing-up area and facilities for ice pack freezing. Campfires and barbecues are both allowed: if you fancy frying up eggs in the morning, ask the farm team if the hens have laid any ready to buy. Nearby, Heathfield farmers' market on the third Saturday of every month is the place to pick up fresh local produce, fruit, veg and meat.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Steve is a most welcoming host. The side is well managed with excellent toilet and hot shower facilities, and a washing up station with charging points and a freezer to store ice packs. The pitches are spacious and positioned around the perimeter of the on the main field, leaving plenty of space for kids to meet and enjoy a game of football, or just play together (which ours did). There are gravel pitches for campers, a handy shop, wood to buy and fire pits for free, and Geno’s Java van was a welcome bonus in the morning. We followed the cuckoo trail up to the Runt in Tun pub (about 3.7 miles of walking) where we enjoyed an afternoon of pub grub and a few pints of Harveys in a lovely local hostelry - much recommended. And before we went to site we spent the day at Kbockhatch, where if your kids are between 6-10 years old, they will have a great time. Lovely site. Run by lovely people. Enjoy your stay.

Disliked: Nothing really.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This place is amazing. They are so friendly and helpful, there's a little shop to get essentials you may have forgotten (or mashmellows for the fire). The toilets, showers and kitchen spaces are clean and the showers were constantly warm. You're allowed fires and unless you ask for anything you're left to your own devices. You can drive down to your pitch to unload and set up and the parking isn't too far away either. We loved this place and will be back. I have just seen a rating for WiFi but we had our phones off so not sure if they offer it or not.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fontmills Farm is a really great camp site in a pleasant and quiet location. Good for walks and cycling. The owners Steve & Nicola are welcoming, friendly and accommodating to any requests. The facilities (toilets and showers) are well maintained & clean, the main wash-up area has a couple of very useful freezers for your ice-packs & there are electric sockets for re-charging your phones & tablets. Pitches are wide too so there's plenty of space to spread out.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Access the walks and flat cycling of the Cuckoo Trail direct from the bottom of the farm, the old railway track between Heathfield and Polegate made into a safe and traffic-free 14-mile path. More walks of the highly scenic variety can be had among the spectacular coastal views of the famed white cliffs at the Seven Sisters Country Park and Beachy Head, or among the South Downs a few miles from the farm. You could also wander through Sussex flowers and wildlife in Friston Forest, or among the paths and scenery of Winnie the Pooh's Ashdown Forest, nearby in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home of the bear with very little brain. The farm is a few miles from Eastbourne if you fancy a day on the beach, and less than 20 from the shops, shingle and nightlife of Brighton. Hastings, Battle and Tunbridge Wells are also within 20 miles. For kids, have a day out at Drusillas Park, aimed at ages two to 10; get them thoroughly tuckered out quad biking and more at Knockhatch Adventure Park, or get along to Blackstock Farm near Hailsham, with indoor and outdoor play areas, a farm shop and a café. Heaps of history is easy to get to too, like 15-century moated castle Herstmonceux Castle, also home of the famed astronomical Observatory Science Centre; and the former home of Rudyard Kipling at the National Trust's Batemans. The old village of Alfriston is a handsome place to stop for a pub lunch. For full-on culture, the world-famed Glyndebourne opera house, site of the annual Glyndebourne Festival Opera, is within easy driving distance.
