Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: The views are stunning and the field is generous - lots of room! The hosts are lovely and the local pub is just a five min walk.

Disliked: Dislike seems harsh! It’s not well-signposted, especially if you approach up the hill. It’s not a big issue in a car but can present an issue in a camper if you miss the turn and need to find somewhere safe to turn around.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I stayed here with friend as a base to have a couple of days cycling in the area last Fri & Sat. Both Caroline and her husband were very friendly and helpful. The site is based across two fields, this first is undulating and the second more flat. Both have varied pitch options. We pitched up near the main gate of the first field/entrance, overlooking the rest of the site. I note that a previous review had stated the site was next to a main road. This is misleading/inaccurate. You do naturally enter via a road but it is in no way a busy road and certainly not one that would effect your stay in any way to the negative. The onsite facilities are simple - running water and a compost loo (very effective, very clean and has little to no smell). We bought logs from Carolines husband to have in a raised fire pit (which we brought ourselves as you can't have fires direct on the ground to avoid damage). There is no wifi thank god but I did sadly still have 5G! Everyone/other campers I spoke to during our stay seems to all feel that the site was a lovely place to be and were happy to forego a shower for a couple of days. The beach is half a mile down the hill. We rode to Rye and back along through the nature reserve which I would recommend. Overall a lovely place to stay and I would recommend.

Local attractions

It’s not a well-known tourist attraction, but the village of Pett has much to offer for visitors – it’s the kind of place where you can still watch cricket on summer weekend afternoons, stop by at the pub for a pint of local ale and/or join in with various activities in the village hall (a yoga class, perhaps, or something for the kids). Once you’ve spent some time at Pett Level beach (10 minutes’ walk), perhaps you’d like to get a little further along the coastline to the fossil hunting hotspot Fairlight Cove (20 minutes’ drive) or the stunning sand dunes of Camber Sands (25 minutes). Hastings (15 minutes) is another good option, with a historic tinge, and Rye (15 minutes) has a whole lot of antique shops as well as a harbourside nature reserve with bike hire available. If the kids demand a bit more action, try Knockhatch Adventure Park (45 minutes) – or take them to see the cute animals at the South of England Rare Breeds Centre (half an hour). Port Lympne Safari Park (45 minutes) is the place if they’re after bigger beast spottings.
