Lake at dusk

  • Stays at a first-rate angling centre five minutes' drive from Battle
  • A 15-minute drive to Bexhill-on-Sea; 20 minutes to Hastings
  • Eight fishing lakes, tackle shop, farm shop and café on site
With eight lakes to pick from, it’s no surprise that stays on site at Wylands Farm are particularly fine options for keen anglers. But that’s not all this East Sussex site has going for it: this is 1066 country, with historic Battle about a five-minute drive away, and the south coast about 20 minutes away. All this means that Wylands is an equally fine option for the sort of holiday that mixes up fishing time and other activities (or provides alternative outings for different strands of a family group…). Those who aren’t into fishing, or want a break from the water, might like to have a wander around Hastings, hit the beach in Bexhill-on-Sea or find walking trails in the surrounding High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (or even in the 154 acres of woodland around the site). And for those looking to get stuck into the fishing? Well, there’s plenty on site – this is a place that’s earned itself a reputation as one of the best angling centres around. The eight lakes (including a catfish lake) cater for specialist, match and pleasure anglers, and there’s also a tackle shop for kit and friendly advice, along with a café and farm shop stocked with local produce to ensure you won’t go hungry. (Please note that fishing is not included and must be booked separately.) Had a good day by the lake? Take yourself off to the local pub, a mile away, to celebrate over a drink and dinner – or sort supplies at the supermarket in Battle and spend the evening tending your barbecue back on site.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Peace and quite. Plenty of room around your pitch. Clean toilets and showers. Farm shop and cafe on site.

Disliked: Bit of a slope to pitch on but not a huge problem. Toilet facilities could do with a bit of an upgrade but clean and serviceable.

Liked: Always happy at Wylands. My “go too” site in East Sussex. Great Cafe overlooking a fishing lake to watch them reeling in huge carp plus a farm shop and good walks. Really helpful staff. Great location near Battle Abbey. Oh dear, I’ve given it away and every one will want to go there now !

Disliked: Other campers nicking the toilet rolls!

Local attractions

Before you hasten over to Hastings (20 minutes’ drive), you might want to figure out your plan of action, because there’s a lot of activities to choose from. A beach day? Up the cliff railway for views over the Old Town? Or peering at the fish in the aquarium? Castles and other historic sights are scattered around this area too, including the 14th-century Bodiam Castle (20 minutes), the 300-acre 15th-century Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) and the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings (five minutes), now an English Heritage site. To add some more historic places into the mix, there’s the Benedictine Battle Abbey (five minutes) or the grand Great Dixter House & Gardens (25 minutes). And over in Bexhill-on-Sea (15 minutes), the beach is an added benefit on top of museums and the De La Warr Pavilion, which has shows and exhibitions in a Modernist building. To wash it all down, Carr Taylor Wines (15 minutes) runs vineyard tours. Or there are peaceful wildlife-packed wanders around the Powdermill Wood Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ walk) that will help to wind things down nicely.
