  • Hardstanding pitches in the grounds of a Tebay sports club
  • In the Howgill Fells, half an hour's drive from Windermere
  • Close to the M6 for easy stopovers; local pub two minutes' walk
Surrounded by the Howgill Fells and just at the spot where the Yorkshire Dales National Park meets the Lake District National Park, well… it goes without saying that Rubber Dub Dub is in an absolutely top-notch location for a Cumbria walking holiday. This pop-up site is based within the grounds of Tebay Sports and Social Club, and its hardstanding pitches have electric hookups as well as access to the club’s toilet and shower facilities. Barbecues are permitted if you’d like to get a bit of outdoor cooking on the go (perhaps using produce you’ve picked up from the Tebay services farm shop, five minutes’ drive away); there’s also a local pub a couple of minutes’ walk away for a well-earned meal and pint at the end of your day of hiking. Speaking of hiking, you’ll have heaps of options around here, with some local hotspots including Cautley Spout waterfall, Sedbergh and Windermere (all within a half-hour drive). Dogs are welcome to join you on stays at this site – you should be able to find plenty of places nearby for walkies, and the pub is happy to host visiting dogs and their owners. As well as being a splendid spot for walking holidays, Rubber Dub Dub is also very handily close to the M6, making it a great place to consider if you're looking for a stopover on a long motorway journey north or south.

Local attractions

The area of the Howgill Fells just around the site is laced with walking trails that can accommodate anything from a short circular stroll to a full-on uphill clamber. Heading a little further into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, waterfall hunters may like to take the trails to Cautley Spout (25 minutes' drive) or Hardraw Force (40 minutes) – perhaps following up the latter with a bit of cheese sampling at the Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre. Aiming west instead takes you into the Lake District National Park for walks and watersports at Windermere (half an hour), a trip to Sizergh Castle and all sorts of walks including waterside wanders and mountain escapades (Helvellyn is 45 minutes away, for example). If you want to dial up the adventure a bit more, several outfits in the area organise canyoning and caving outings; meanwhile, gentler times can be found at the Lakeland Maze Farm Park (25 minutes), Wreay Syke Alpacas (25 minutes) or the Lakeland Motor Museum (35 minutes).

Liked: Site was exactly what I expected with two major exceptions...the Social Club we were allowed in for the evening, was brilliant and the people were lovely. Second, the showers and toilet were great and made all the difference for us. It is a car park, it does not pretend to be anything else. There is power, toilets, a pub round the corner for food and if your lucky enough to get into the social club, great value drinks and pool table etc. Will be stopping here again. Quick 5 minute drive to the services for a stunning breakfast too!

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Quiet, safe site, excellent clean facilities. Close enough to the M6 to make it a great choice for a stopover, far enough away to kill the noise. Not exactly the country idyll - it's a car park, but pleasant nonetheless. If you stay, you'll be supporting a great local sports and social club.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: This is a good place to stop. The pitch holds 3 or 4 VW size vans in the far corner of a quiet social club car park. Electric hook up, toilets and showers are all spot on. People are friendly and you can get a pint from the bar and take it to your van. There are other spots nearby where you can stay in pub car parks for cheap but you have to buy an evening meal in the pub, this place works out a lot cheaper if you feed yourself then get a drink in the club. I expect I’ll call back, it’s a good no nonsense pitch.

Disliked: Nothing really.
