  • Modern shepherd's huts on a peaceful Eden Valley smallholding
  • A 15-minute drive from Penrith; half an hour from Ullswater
  • Rural site with far-reaching views and barbecues provided
If you're on the lookout for comfy Cumbria stays, check out the accommodation at Foxwold Huts and Camping, a peaceful farm site set over eight secluded acres of rural land. Surrounded as they are by green surrounds and finished to a high standard inside and out, these handsome huts make quite the pretty picture and are an all-round brilliant backdrop for stints in the Cumbria countryside. Shepherd's huts have come on quite a bit since pre-industrial times – these models come with barbecue areas, outdoor furniture, plush soft furnishings and comfy beds. They've all been thoughtfully set up far apart from other buildings in a quiet paddock, with green and grassy vistas that are rather lovely to wake up to. They don't come with showers, but separate eco toilet facilities are on hand a short walk away. Those who are in the market for proper rural views have come to the right place: it's part of a smallholding that's taken a variety of animals under its wing over the past few years, including ponies, a flock of sheep and Talulah the resident cow (guests can't actually wander around the farm area but it's certainly a fitting background). There's also a small stream that runs through the site, with fab views over the Pennines to boot. Foxwold Huts and Camping is a mile from Morland village centre, where there's a café, pub and historic parish church. Penrith (15 minutes' drive) is home to the nearest supermarket.

What customers say

This beautiful, peaceful site offers well-maintained, clean shepherd's huts with thoughtful extras. Guests praise the friendly, helpful hosts, eco-friendly facilities like the outdoor shower, and the tranquil, private setting. Great for families or a digital detox, though some noted dim lighting and the need for power banks. Highly recommended, though a few found mattresses uncomfortable.

George shepherd's hut

Liked Really lovely stay with my 8 year old. We were there for the August named storm and the cabin was cosy and well equipped. The owners were extremely welcoming and responsive when we had queries and questions.
The bed is firm but not impossibly so and plenty of good pillows etc.

Don't be frightened of the shower-it's lovely!

Each cabin has an area by it, of open ground (big enough for some friendly badminton and swinging around some point), amongst the mowed pathways in the longer grass and flowers. Over the road there is a field which goes down to the river.

The local area is peaceful rolling countryside close enough to the lakes to hop over (we visited Aira Force and walked down Derwent Water and got the boat ferry back up, and enjoyed local walks at wonderfully peaceful rivers and villages.)

(We also had signal with Three mobile.)

Disliked Not a lot springs to mind.

Ruby shepherd's hut

Liked Amazing site, perfect with young children! Everything was well thought out and catered for, from the welcome email before arriving to the owner greeting us on arrival to show around.

Excellent value for money, with everything we needed already there for us. The site a nice size and feels very safe with young children so you can relax whilst they explore all the different paths and meet the sheep. The big cow was a particular favourite!

Loved the extra touches like the logs ready to use in the fire pit, welcome hamper, phone charging lockers in the shed and the quirky shower all added to its appeal. The hut, toilets and shower were spotlessly clean on our arrival and throughout our stay. Clear instructions and well looked after eco toilet. Lots of extra storage space in the hut to put bags away and give you more space, all really well thought out.

It feels very remote and peaceful, with each plot well spaced out so you have plenty of privacy but also great location only 15mins from Penrith and the M6. Limited signal which made us switch off and really enjoy our time there. We enjoyed it so much we’re already planning a return visit!

Disliked Couldn’t think of anything even if we tried. Only wish we’d booked another night!

Thomas shepherd's hut

Liked This site is a haven!!! Me and my daughter have stayed in loads of cool places, but this site just oozed calm. each hut had everything you’d need for a stay, the camping kitchen was kitted out with ample appliances, there was a communal area with a fridge and charging ports for appliances. The site was non electric other than this.

No phone signal - or limited at best. But we liked that. We simply explored, made a fire and enjoyed the site and surrounding animals.

We stayed in Thomas - cutest little thing!

Small goodies on arrival which were a really cute touch including marshmallows for the fire pit.

This site was pristine. Not an thing out of place.

Can’t wait to go back.

Lovely location. Close to Ullswater and Keswick within a 30 minute drive.

Disliked Nothing.

Betty shepherd's hut

Liked We stayed for two nights at Foxewolb in Cumbria and absolutely loved it! The surroundings were stunning, and the cabin was well-equipped with everything we needed. A thoughtful little treat made our stay even more special. During our visit, we explored Lowther Castle and the kids had a great time at the Lost Castle adventure playground. Overall, a wonderful getaway—we’d happily return!

Disliked The only tricky part was the toilet setup, which was a bit challenging for the little ones.

Local attractions

This site is in the sweet spot between the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and North Pennines, all of which can be reached in a 20-minute drive or less. Stick Ullswater (30 minutes) in your satnav if you're on the lookout for sailing or canoeing on a big body of water; there's also a 20-mile long walking route that encircles this loveliest of lakes, with several pubs and hikers’ cafés to be found along the way. History-hunters may well want to spend a spell at Lowther Castle (20 minutes), a cracking country house with landscaped gardens. A niche but interesting option is to take a trip to Kendal Quaker Tapestry Museum (35 minutes) to see its 77 intricately embroidered panels. In the event that the kids come down with a case of museum fatigue, a trip to the movies and live shows at the Rheged Centre (20 minutes) may well be just the job. The World of Beatrix Potter (50 minutes) is another safe bet for younger tots, while more mature teens may favour a high trees jaunt at Go Ape Grizedale (an hour and 10 minutes).
