  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 20 minutes' walk away
Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy. This is a simple site with warm showers and flushing toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass. Both make an excellent choice if you've already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. If you'd rather head out, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

By the Beck primitive grass tent campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked: Fabulous little campsite. No frills but just the most gorgeous location by the river. Kids loved the hammocks. We had a pitch with a private compost toilet & shower which whilst basic was very clean and perfectly adequate, and plenty of hot water in the shower. Owners super helpful in transporting our stuff from the car to the pitch (not far but a very steep hill) and explaining the lovely walk to the pub. Loads to do and see in the area but also a lovely place to just chill. Will definitely be back.

Disliked: Really nothing! Don't come if you want facilities with bells & whistles but if you're happy with basic camping it's perfect.

Hobby Wood primitive grass tent campsite (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Lovely setting, friendly host, clean toilets. Easy access for trips to Lake District & Yorkshire Dales. Didn't stay long enough to try the showers, but they looked clean too! Several families staying whilst we visited. Great price.

Hobby Wood primitive grass tent campsite (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Excellent camping site, great pitch, hot running water for showers which where very clean, not over crowded, loved the green space and hammocks. Very good stay!

Disliked: The car park to the site is down a steep hill so transporting camping equipment back to the car with 2 x small kids is difficult. No shops nearby.

From the manager: Thank you for your great review, so glad you loved the space, its always good to see children running and paddling in the Beck, sorry the weather wasn't a little more kind to you all. We must have missed helping you with your equipment back to the car, sorry, we usually use the gaitor or ATV and children often talk about the transfer to the pitch as one of their favorite parts of the holiday. Shops are not within walking distance, but Kirkby Lonsdale a picturesque market town is just under a ten minute drive away, they have a supermarket, fabulous butcher and lots of independent retailers, added to the the famous Ruskins view which can be seen from the churchyard and river walk this makes it a popular destination for so many of our visitors. We would love to see you return some time in the future. Thank you once again.

Beautiful location, views and a clean site with wonderful hosts.

Alders Edge bell tent

Liked: Beautiful site , peaceful, clean and such gracious hosts. Shirley and her husband were on hand with anything we needed including an ice pack for my daughter and a much appreciated change of tire when we woke up to find a flat tyre this morning (just as we were leaving!) Highlights include: - beautiful river/ beck with their friendly cows greeting us in the morning - hot shower and composte toilet that was always emptied and clean (we stayed in the bell tent so this was private) - ANYTHING we could have needed for camping from cooking equipment to kids books and toys to the fluffiest blankets to keep warm at night - the best views and stars at night which were the perfect accompaniment to the fire pit Overall 10/10 and we hope to come back again! Location is also perfect for exploring the Lake District. We were glad to stay out of the busy Windermere area but were close enough to get there and the surrounding area with ease. Thank you so much for everything :)

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Route directions

Exit the M6 at Junction 36, taking the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale. You will go past the Plough Hotel on your right. Take the next turn on your right-hand side (just past a layby, with a white bungalow on the corner and a signpost for Hutton Roof). Follow this road, and when it bears sharply to the left, do not turn left but carry straight on in front of the row of houses. Follow the road until you reach a T-junction and then turn right. Keep bearing right, passing Rose Cottage; the site is at the next right-hand turn.

Local attractions

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive). For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns. Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate. If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll come to Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
