Evening at the pod
Pods at dusk

  • Cosy glamping pods at a peaceful site on a Cumbria working farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Carlisle and 20 minutes from Gretna Green
  • Well-equipped kitchenette and firepit; pub half a mile away
Cosy Cumbria glamping pods on a working farm – a promising start for anyone in search of a countryside break in this lovely corner of the world. But there’s more… because Hayton Hideaways is one of those locations that has heaps going for it. Rural ramblers are particularly well served here: the farm is just outside the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the top end of the Lake District, with views out over the lakeland fells. Carlisle’s a 15-minute drive away for any urban wanders you may fancy, and beyond that is the Solway coast (about 40 minutes away). On top of all that is easy access to/from the M6 a few minutes away, making this a good pick for those taking long journeys north or south (aside from the fact that you may not want to leave, of course…). Gretna Green and the Scottish border are about a 20-minute drive away. And why might you not want to leave? That would be the stylish pods, each of which has a decked area, a picnic table and a firepit. Inside, all is smart and cosy, with a double bed, a sofa bed, a TV, an ensuite shower room and a well-equipped kitchenette area (to aid with the prep of snacks/drinks/breakfast with a view…) Dogs and kids are welcome on site – for the latter there’s a lovely play park in the community field a couple of minutes’ walk away. And if your country break isn’t complete without a pint? There’s a pub half a mile away in the village of Hayton.

Gelt 1 bedroom camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: The views are excellent, there is no traffic noise, perfectly situated for anyone with dogs. Plenty to do socially, fishing, walking, golf or sitting having a BBQ in your own enclosed area.

Disliked: We are larger adults and found the beds a little restrictive in size,

Liked: Had a recent two day stay would highly recommend these pods. The hosts were very helpful and friendly. The pod was very clean and had everything that was needed. The area was beautiful despite the bad weather we had. Location was good if you wanted to travel further afield. We took our dog who also thoroughly enjoyed himself.

Gelt 1 bedroom camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: The location was perfect with a working farm surrounding the area and a 5 minute walk to the local village with a lovely friendly pub. The owners where extremely friendly and helpful and just leave you to yourself. They have a lovely dog called 'MEG' who just wonders around and has a lovely temperment and very playful with other dogs (my westie loved playing with her). The pod itself was amazing and very cosy perfect size and had everything we needed for the 48hrs we spent there, unfortunately we never got to use the hot hub due to the weather but it was a lovely extra. 100% will book here again.

Disliked: This isnt a dislike it is more of a nice to have 'no wifi'. We had full signal and 4G so it was not a issue.

Liked: The location, the pod, amenities... meg the sheep dog 😍 We had the best time, can't wait to come back in the summer xx

Disliked: We loved everything about our stay, the one thing we would change if we had to choose ... was for the TV to be on along enough bracket for it.to face the bed ... this was only because we had bad weather so lying around doing nothing was our plan. But Part from that .... we cannot wait to come back xx

Liked: Dan and Jo were both lovely, made sure that everything was perfect. We were welcomed when we arrived and were given information about the place and told of we’re needed anything don’t be afraid to give them a ring. They were even kind enough to upgrade our cabin on the day of arrival. This meant that we were surprised with a hot tub and a sun room that we were more than welcome to use. Shortly after our arrival we were greeted by the family dog Meg, she was amazing, we would have taken her home ourselves:) The walking routes were lovely and they suggested some great places to go. We ended up going to a few of these places and it safe to say they are well worth a day out to explore. We had a bbq night where I only had to drop them a quick message and they dropped off the bbq and fire pit supplies that day. We could not have asked for better hosts :)

Disliked: Nothing at all it was all perfect:)

Local attractions

Country-style outings around here can have many different themes: get straight to the trails of Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes’ drive), meet the farm animals at Walby Farm Park (15 minutes) or give your day out a historical edge by heading for Hadrian’s Wall (20 minutes) and Roman fort Vindolanda (half an hour). There’s heritage of a different kind on display at both the Solway Aviation Museum (10 minutes) and the steam-driven South Tynedale Railway (35 minutes). To explore flight of a more natural variety, aim for the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (25 minutes). When it's time for a change of scenery, you have choices: head west for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum in Carlisle (15 minutes), continue on to Silloth West beach (50 minutes) or point yourselves south for walks, watersports and boat trips in the Lake District National Park (half an hour).
