  • Small-scale Lake District campsite with direct access to the fells
  • A mile and a half from Bampton; Ullswater 20 minutes’ drive
  • Surrounded by Herdwick sheep; views over Haweswater Reservoir
Low Scarside is a small, simple and scenic site located in a paddock around a mile and a half from the pretty village of Bampton. This rural spot is surrounded by Lake District countryside and has excellent access to nearby fells, lakes and trails, including the Knipe Scar footpath which starts just metres from the site gates. The main pitching area here is in a secluded paddock, with easy access to the common land overlooking Bampton. Parking is roughly 100 metres away from the pitches, and simple facilities like a portable toilet and water tap are supplied. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here throughout the camping season and barbecues are permitted. To pick up supplies, you might want to head half a mile down the road to the local shop or drive into Shap (10 minutes), a small town by the M6 where there is a well-stocked supermarket. Lots of great pubs, cafés and restaurants can be found throughout the Lowther Valley, but your hosts particularly recommend Askham (15 minutes' drive), a small village next to the historic grounds of Lowther Castle and Gardens.
