Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Wonderful location and great back to basics campsite. Very friendly and helpful owner. There was loads of space on the site, even fully booked (no cramming in the tents here). Being just a stones throw to the lake for swimming and playing in boats was ideal, and stunning views from the top of Whin Rigg next door.

Disliked: There were midges about on an evening and morning, but pretty unavoidable this time of year and once a slight breeze came up they were soon gone.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful surrounds.spacious with pitching on the Thursday.accomadating hosts.water container changed daily.portaloos cleaned daily with adequate loo roll and gel. Ten mins walk down to lake. Backs onto gorgeous woodland.posdible our favourite camp yet.bonus of seeing jets training over lake.

Disliked: I was reluctant to camp low down in the field incase it was a wash out so was left to camp on slope which created bad sleep and also didn't want the car to get stuck. Shower would have made a great weekend super but I knew there wasn't 1 before I booked.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location, 15 mins walk from pub, 5 mins walk from lake, really nice cafe just outside of campsite on the river, views of mountains around the campsite. Rather quiet site. Probably the cheapest campsite in the lake District. Well worth 10 pound a night. Will definitely be back.

Disliked: Lot of midges

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The campsite is set in the most beautiful location. Walks, forests to explore, rivers, the lake, all so easily accessible. The jets flying over was It was so peaceful, no WiFi, absolutely perfect for a break from the chaos of life for 6 nights. The owners keep the site so clean and are super lovely and helpful. We would definitely go back !

Disliked: If there was one thing it was that on our last night a group of people turned up (6 cars) and parked right in the middle of the field with music on until after 11pm then it started again at 8. Obviously not an issue with the site at all, just people being inconsiderate 🙂

Local attractions

Just five minutes’ stroll from the camping field, Wastwater is a hub for wild swimmers, scuba divers, paddleboarders and kayakers – you can hire gear from the rental shop 10 minutes’ drive away. The lake is also fertile ground for anglers, who can fish for Arctic char, trout and salmon (in season). Hardened hikers have direct access to ventures up Scafell Pike (three hours) from the site. If you’re thinking of less strenuous days out, play a round at Eskdale Golf Course (25 minutes), or take the weight off your feet completely with a train tour of the West Lakes fell and mountain scenery on Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, locally known as ‘La’al Ratty’ (15 minutes). Local kid-friendly options include trotting through the fells with alpacas at Wastwater Alpaca Trekking (25 minutes), or a gentle scramble up Wasdale (an hour and a half’s walk from the site) to the Fairy Pools. The sand-and-shingle beaches at Seascale (25 minutes) and Ravenglass (20 minutes) are both dog-friendly, with lots of rook pools for splashing around in.
