Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Lovely site with good sized level pitches. It's a big site but doesn't feel like it as pitches arranged into small fields which we liked.well stocked shop.

Disliked: Could not give 5 stars as site had problems with boiler so we had no hot water for showers. Might seem petty but after long day in the hills was disappointing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved the location, beautiful scenery . Especially at sunset! Pub had a lovely selection of beers and good decore.

Disliked: The pub only served guests booked in for food, didn't have any notices up saying that was what was happening, turned more people away for food than had dining in the establishment from what we could see and other chatter around the area.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Location was beautiful, staff were helpful, they let us move pitch, the showers were lovely and warm and the toilet block very clean

Disliked: Price of £8 per night for a fire pit we thought was very high plus the price of the logs you would need to fill it, would become very expensive if you were there for a while,we decided not to due to price

Powered cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite (no awning)

Liked: The layout of the showers was really great, loads of space to get dry. All very clean and maintained. The location was the perfect base for several Wainwright's and all the staff really friendly. Handy to have a well stocked shop. Only downside was limited WiFi and phone connection which we could only get around the reception area. One of our favourite sites.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Location. Perfect location for what we had planned for our stay. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Disliked: No hot water from Saturday. Unable to shower or wash up. Still not fixed when we left in the Monday. Ground to put pegs in had lots of concrete underneath so pegs kept bending.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We apologies for the broken heating system in our shower block, which is not a regular occurance. We did everything we could to restore the hot water during the weekend and appreciate that this took a day to be acheived. The time it took for an engineer to arrive was sadly out of our hands. As we are in one of the glacial valleys of the lake district, the ground does have many rocks under the surface, which is why we would recommend bringing and using rock pegs if you stay in any lake district location.

Local attractions

Whether you’re climbing, canoeing or just ambling gently around with picnic in backpack, the Wasdale valley is a pretty pleasant place for a Lake District break. The valley is over 10 miles long if you fancy a full day’s historic hike, starting from the village of Wasdale Head, the start of the Three Peaks Challenge and the former home of Cumbrian pub landlord Will Ritson, whose tall tales led to the still-going-strong Biggest Liar Competition. One of the tiniest churches in the land, St Olaf’s, is at Wasdale in its ‘Viking fields’: Wasdale was originally settled by Norse farmers and the beams in the church are rumoured to be from Viking longships. Climbers can get to Scafell Pike and Great Gable from Wasdale Head, but walkers can continue along the valley length down to the village of Gosforth, which has the biggest Viking Cross in England at the Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church. Finally, fancy the beach? The Cumbrian coast at Seascale is seven miles from Church Stile Farm (walkable, you might reckon), with miles of sandy beach leading to the Lake District’s only coastal village, the fishing village of Ravenglass.
