Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful setting, with hills all around. Nearby stream a few minutes walk away. The showers were wonderfully warm and cleaned frequently. The toilets were clean and regularly maintained. The washing up area was tidy and had hot water too. Not the quietest site I've stayed on, but no real noise from 10:30pm.

Disliked: We stayed for 2 nights. The first night when we arrived the field was extremely wet and boggy. Everything got very muddy, people were slipping in the mud, a car got stuck and had to be pushed. However, I think this was probably a rare case of arriving after lots of rain, as by the following day the field had dried out a lot.

Liked: Great place and loved the hospitality and friendly staff. I also loved the cleanliness of the place and used the shower block which is a first for me at a campsite. Close to some good walks and a nice pub. Dog friendly

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Scenic, nice places to wonder nearby. Toilets and wash facilities were in good order, numerous water taps around site were handy. Spacious with room for kids to play. The neighbors had a beautiful dog who came to sit with us for the evening.

Disliked: Very busy and noisy on the second night, luckily my son sleeps through anything otherwise I'd have packed up. Amount of traffic turned the entry into a bog. Price was double what I'd paid for a peaceful site nearby a couple of weeks ago but I'd left booking too late for that one.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Liked nothing! I was quite astounded when I arrived that the campsite had not called and forewarned me that the campsite was flooded. The field was like a quagmire! My tent is ruined and my children basically spent their night playing in mud. The facilities were very, very basic and not kept clean. Two people in our party could not drive their cars into the field as they feared they would get stuck on it. My car subsequently needs a deep valet from all the mud that’s it’s acquired from having to pack down all the muddy equipment. There is a fast flowing river running round the outside of one side of the campsite. The fence has broke down, so it is easily accessible for children to get near too, posing a risk to them. If this field were not flooded it would’ve been better but still very basic. All it would’ve taken was a courtesy call from the owners to say it isn’t fit to camp on then I would’ve saved a lot of hassle.

Disliked: All of it! Ruined our trip!

Liked: Very nice location though was a bit hard to find as post code too us elsewhere. It had been raining so field was muddy and not ideal but we enjoyed and had good fun. Will visit again possibly during relatively dry conditions. lol

Disliked: Muddy dur to continuous rain and not easily accessible based on directions

Local attractions

Those of you who are ready and willing to get a little mucky (go on – you’re on holiday) might want to get started with some quad biking or Segwaying 10 minutes’ walk from the site. You’ve got a few ways to get stuck in at Whinlatter Forest Park (15 minutes' drive) – aside from hiking, cycling and mountain biking, there are zipwires and treetop obstacles to tackle on the Go Ape course. That’s not all in the way of outdoorsy pursuits. The local adventure centre (five minutes) runs kayaking and canoeing, scrambling, rock climbing, archery and another high ropes course. If you like a challenge, Catbells (five minutes) is a fell with a six-kilometre hike. For a watersports day, nearby Nichol End Marine (five minutes) offer a 20% discount for all campsite guests (just ask the site for the discount code after you've booked your pitch). Otherwise, take a more leisurely route (or a boat, if you want to rest your feet) around Derwentwater (10 minutes’ walk). Aira Force Waterfall (half an hour’s drive) has more spectacular water scenery. For more of those chilled-out activities, be sure to call by the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Castlerigg Stone Circle (15 minutes), a Neolithic stone circle.
