  • Peaceful back to basics Cumbria site with lovely Lake District views
  • A 10-minute drive to either Kendal or Windermere
  • Tree-lined grass pitch area a mile from the local village pub
Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back to basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see… This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still are a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Friendly team, quiet area, not too many other campers and everyone respectful. Very good showers, basic toilets and washing up facilities. Lovely pub 2 min drive- sun inn. Very good food. Easy 5-10 minute drive into Windermere.

Disliked Hard to locate, the country road in is big enough for 1 vehicle and is a 2 way road which was sketchy. Came face to face with another vehicle nearly every time I drove down the road, only 1 place on the whole stretch to pull in. Obviously not the campsites fault just something to be aware of!

From the manager: Thank you for such a lovely review! We're really pleased you enjoyed your stay, and we look forward to welcoming you again should you wish to stay with us in future.

Just incase anyone is reading this RE locating us, we do provide quite a comprehensive set of location instructions which go out in our booking confirmation emails (including a WhatThreeWords pin, and a detailed set of written directions). We're only a few hundred meters down a back lane, and there a couple of passing spots along the way if you need them. It gives our campsite an extra level of tranquility being off the main road, so don't let this put you off.

Thanks again!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great location. Super friendly staff who came over for a chat & explained everything, nothing was too much trouble. Facilities were everything you need. Shower block was clean with hot water, shower gel was also provided, nice touch. Lovely to hear the sheep during the day & owls in the evening, very relaxing to get away from the busy noisy town life. Great place for family's looking for a safe place to camp with children. Evenings were extremely quiet & everyone respectful of others. If your into stargazing the night sky you'd die for, never seen so many stars !!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! We really appreciate it, and we're glad you'd recommend us to friends and would stay again.

Apologies that your after hours experience was substandard, we do make considerable efforts to police noise later on in the evening but sometimes loud conversations slip through the net, unless we're made aware of them at the time. RE the toilets - as they're portaloos there is always going to be some level of smell, but we endeavour to minimise this through frequent cleaning. A lot of our guests give us really nice feedback on our loos - we certainly recognise the importance of keeping them in good shape.

Best wishes,

The Church Lane Campsite team.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Really nice campsite, the lads running it were sound as well. Good facilities, basic but that’s all that’s required really. Nice location, only thing I’d say is maybe add a mirror to the exit as it’s a bit of a blind turn. I’ll definitely be returning.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great remote location with friendly people working there! Showers were good with lots of hot water, good sized sinks for washing up and drinking water. 4 x portaloos and no one had to wait whilst we were there for the weekend. We camped for the first time with our toddler and it was a friendly space. Would definitely come back!

Disliked Portaloos were always cleaned when attendants were there, but got a quite dirty overnight from bigger groups.

There was someone flying a drone across the fields on top of the tents around 9/10 PM, which was a bit noisy, which wasn't ideal.

Local attractions

If you’re here to explore the attractions of the Lake District National Park, there’s surely no better place to start than Windermere (10 minutes’ drive) – it is, after all, England’s largest natural lake. Boat trips and various watersports (including kayaking and paddleboarding) can help you get out on the water, or you can stick to the lakeshore for a walk, a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes) or adventure activities at Brockhole on Windermere (15 minutes). Other nearby natural attractions include Kentmere (20 minutes) and Rydal Cave (25 minutes); but if you hit a rainy day, maybe you’d prefer to head to Kendal (10 minutes) for its various museums and arts venues, or to Levens Hall (15 minutes), a little way south of the town. Something to keep the kids happy? Try the animal experiences at Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) or Predator Experience – Wolf Experience UK (25 minutes). Or, if you’d like a bit of peace for a while, lose them in the labyrinth at Lakeland Maze Farm Park (15 minutes).
