Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location close to town.

Disliked: Very basic campsite. 4 portable toilets with no toilet roll and a bin. Water had to be collected from static site next door.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The pitch has beautiful views out over the bay. It is only a short 12 minute walk to the promenade and less than 20 minute walk into the town center for shops/local ammonites. The facilities are very basic (4-5 port-a-loo’s) but for £20 a night I can’t complain! This was our first time taking our young children camping and they enjoyed how safe a space it was go explore, kept them very happy.

Disliked: Not the sites fault but once we had gotten our young children to bed (after 10:30pm) a few tents up then starts karaoke which was very loud and woke them up! Thankfully the heavy rain started so that didn’t last too long, I understand that they may have been having fun but the noise was very loud and not what you would expect on a family campsite. Unless you arrive mega early (which we regretted not) you will more than likely be left a pitch slot on the hill which was less than ideal but didn’t really affect our overall stay.

Local attractions

Golfers can practise their swing on seafront links or a hilltop course (both five minutes’ drive) with Lakes views. Experienced riders might like the chance to hack across the fells on rare-breed Friesian horses (10 minutes), while horse-lovers of the betting kind can catch race meetings at Cartmel Racecourse. There’s plenty of beach walking on offer too, on the wide expanse of Morecambe Bay’s Silverdale Coast (30 minutes) or Blackstone Point (35 minutes), and you’ll come across salt marshes and woodland trails at Roudsea Wood and Mosses National Nature Reserve (15 minutes). For something a bit more vigorous, The Old Man of Coniston (45 minutes) is a challenging mountain hike rewarded with spectacular views across the Lake District. To up the cultural vibe, there are summer theatre evenings and guided tours at Holker Hall and Gardens (10 minutes), and Grasmere (50 minutes) has several Wordsworth-related attractions and 17th-century cottages owned by the National Trust.
