Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay here. The location is perfect if you’re looking for somewhere out the way, it had all the basic necessities to make camping easier such as toilets, showers and even a washing up area. The camp site wasn’t over booked which again we enjoyed as everyone had their own space if that’s what you’re looking for. We will definitely be coming back as it’s so affordable too and seeing all the farm animals free roaming or just pottering around made it more enjoyable for us! The owners were really lovely and went out their way to to tell us about walks etc etc. They even have a little chalk board!

Disliked: This isn’t a dislike at all! But make sure to bring strong tent pegs as the field is a little rocky but didn’t cause us any issues at all!!

Liked: Space was great, owner was lovely and everyone around the site really friendly.

Disliked: Was on a farm so animals as expected, didn't cause any big issues but did have sheep near the tents before they moved on, again, animals were all friendly just depends whether you want that experience or not.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Moss Side Farm is unique, being a working farm you may occasionally open up your tent in the morning to be greeted with a load of sheep grazing next to you, rams, chickens or ducks. Wandering the farm you'll see 2 of the most adorable young pigs who run to say hello in their little pen, horses and cows. The site is well maintained with Louise looking after the guest, the farm hands are very friendly too. The facilities are great, warm showers with private cubicles, the toilets have a few stalls and the washing up area has hot water provided. Wood, kindling come right from the farm, we would often pass who I assume is Louise's husband chopping wood in the morning and bagging it. They also sell firelighters. The pitch itself was great, a nice quite flat field not 5 minutes from the ablutions/washing area. The pitch was large and you do have free reign go pick for yourself from one of three fields. The farm is a 5 minute drive from broughton with lots of walking routes straight from the site too. Coniston is a 20 minute drive. This is our second visit to Moss Side Farm and we will continue to come back as it is idyllic. Yes it is a working farm and animals smell so if you are a bit sensitive to smell, may be worth bypassing. It can also get noisy with the cows wandering past, moving fields etc but I found that rather nice. Also firepits are freely available and plenty of them, if none in your pitch/field, go grab one from another.

Disliked: If quite a few people use the showers one after another, the water will become tepid but this is to be expected and not a detractor.

Liked: Lovely views and location close to village with a lovely walk from back of camp and along the old railway line into Broughton. Here was a couple of pubs and shops

Disliked: Farm dogs roaming around all day. Make sure you secure tents and awnings as we discovered when we came back from a day out the dogs had got in our awning.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Very sorry to hear that our farm sheep dog had found its way into your awning. Its has become apparent recently that because she has a litter of pups she has been looking for extra food!! Although we have been feeding her extra portions to feed her up we hadn't realised that she had taken to sniffing her way round campers rubbish bags etc. Huge apologies. She is now under a strict watch and even more food. Louise

Rail camping pod

Liked: Location, location, location. Loved it was a working farm, loved the animals visiting. The rail pod was comfortable, if basic. We lit the stove which made it very cosy. Plenty of hot water in showers, could do with more towel hooks though. The rail pod would benefit from a shelf or cupboard to put food. Also the rail pod would be nice with stable/half opening doors, would mean we could sit in cabin with half door open so dogs couldn’t get out.

Disliked: Nothing negative just suggestions, toilets need an upgrade. Be nice to buy eggs at farm. This is our second visit, won’t be our last.

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed your stay, nice to see you both again. Louise

Rail camping pod

Liked: The owner came and welcomed us, she was very nice. The views are amazing and the place is quiet and peaceful

Disliked: The railway pods have no electric outlets, I know it's described as camping without the tent, but I'd assume if there are lights there would be at least one socket. The mattress protector which was placed on the bed (bottom bunk) was covered in black dog hairs. Also the showers were freezing, no or very little warm water came out

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Really sorry to hear that the mattress protector had dog hairs on it, I can only assume that one of my little dogs had sneaked in for a cheeky nap whilst the doors were left open, airing the cabin before you arrived. If you had brought this to my attention I would have been absolutely mortified, apologetic and change it right away. Regarding the cold water, we were having issues with our second hot water tank which, unfortunately went on the blink at the start of the Bank Holiday weekend. Usually we manage adequately with one tank but for busy times we switch on the second......it didnt heat up. Fixed now! I dont understand why you didnt bring these issues to my attention while you were here but waited to you were home and gave me a bad review? You say that "The owner came and welcomed us, she was very nice" So why not be "very nice" too? You could have talked to me about the issues, giving me a chance to rectify the problem. That would have been very nice. Louise

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction. If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive. Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth. The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans. The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.
