  • Scenic Eden Valley glamping site set in 12 acres on a Cumbria farm
  • Hadrian’s Wall 15 minutes’ drive and the Lake District 40 minutes
  • Lakeside pitches with views over the fells; pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Set deep in Cumbrian fell country 15 minutes’ drive from the pretty town of Brampton, Otter Moss Accommodation has a range of smart glamping options to suit couples, families and groups. Set within 12 acres on a working dairy farm, most of the site is set around a large meadow, which overlooks a lake with three islands in it – a rowing boat is available if you like messing about on the water. The site is located at the northern end of the gorgeous Eden Valley, with far-reaching views over the fells, and on clear days you can see as far as the Solway Firth and the hills of the Lake District National Park. All accommodation units here come with some form of heating and are well equipped with kitchen utensils and stoves. Along with all bedding and towels, firepits/barbecues are also included but you’ll need to supply your own wood. If you’re not going down the self-catering route, the area also has lots of local pubs, with a good selection available within a five-mile radius.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Lovely hut in a lovely setting. Couldn't wish for anything more, would definitely stay again. The hut was clean and tidy and contained everything we needed. The host was very helpful and quick to reply. Would recommend the fox and pheasant inn, in Armathwaite. Village shop in Armathwaite was also very handy for wood for the log burner and other supplies. Our dog love it too

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Camping pod

Liked: We loved everything about our stay. We stayed in the pod and It was equipped with everything we needed and more for our weekend getaway. The kids had a lovely space to run around freely as well as the adults having a beautiful view. It was peaceful, quiet and relaxing. The rowing boat was a brilliant touch and added a little extra fun. The views and walks around were wonderful. We enjoyed the fire pit to toast marshmallows and to keep warm each night. Shops are not too far away either, no more than a 10-15 minute drive to local co-op. It was our first holiday/getaway as a family and it honestly was brilliant. We can’t wait to come again.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Highly recommend. We really loved the Shepherds Hut, it was really well equipped and spotless!! Everyone was helpful & super friendly. We are dog lovers so the resident pooches were an added bonus. Gorgeous site and far enough away from other guests it didn’t feel cramped at all. Loved the little boat too, a fun touch. We stayed with friends who booked the cabin and didn’t realise it wasn’t in the same field but it wasn’t an issue for us. Our dog loved roaming around the open field and pond area. We headed to Duke Of Cumberland for a pub lunch and would recommend, especially the steak pie! Would absolutely stay again. Peaceful weekend on a gorgeous site, just what we wanted :) thank you!!

Liked: A peaceful location with everything we needed to relax and enjoy our stay in the shepherds hut. Morning walks around the grounds the sun beaming down, birds singing , the smell of breakfast cooking and fresh air was wonderful. A very clean cosy well equipped accommodation. Cabin

Liked: Privacy and tranquility. Comfy bed. Watching the wildlife. Attention to detail from the owners re comfort. Good shower and washing up.

Disliked: Cooking in the room would be a bit unrealistic. It’s great for good weather. Loo a bit further away than we expected but not too far

Camping pod

Liked: Overall we had an absolutely fantastic stay and Ruth was amazing throughout. Totally made us feel comfortable and we were able to contact during and after the stay (when I thought I’d left something on site😬🤣) -The little rowing boat on site which is available to use whenever you like for free. -Everything you need is in the pod: pots, pans, cups, cutlery, heater, extension lead, etc -Very comfortable bed and bedding included- I even searched online for the duvet once we left! -Clean toilet block with shower. -Complimentary jar of biscuits. -There is a large grass area for children/dogs to play around on so I’d recommend bringing a ball or some games as there’s not much in the area to do with kids. -Overall a lovely, relaxing, clean site, and we would definitely stay again.

Disliked: -Not much around (about a 20 min drive to local Tesco) however this is not the site’s fault, just worth pointing out. -Again, not the site’s fault but the description states there is a fire pit but doesn’t state if wood is provided or is available to buy- it isn’t- therefore we had to travel to the nearest shops to find some. -The rules when you first go in state that dogs are absolutely not allowed on the beds, which although incredibly difficult with our dog, we did manage to adhere to, but if you have a larger dog or it is used to sleeping in beds, the pod doesn’t have much room for them to stay on.

Local attractions

There’s certainly some spectacular countryside around these parts. It’s about 40 minutes to drive to hiking, climbing and cycling activities in Lake District National Park, while the remote and untamed North Pennines National Landscape (15 minutes) also offers walking and biking options by the dozen. Fancy a mini history lesson? Many parts of Hadrian’s Wall are within 15 minutes’ drive, with the remains of an ancient Roman garrison at Birdoswald Roman Fort (25 minutes), which also has an informative visitor centre and stunning views over the fells of Cumbria and the River Irthing. If the kids are just not interested in heritage, treat them to an afternoon of quad biking and ferret racing at Walby Farm Park (20 minutes), where you can also meet gentle Shire horses and alpacas. They can also try out watersports, feed the swans and follow the animal-themed sculpture walk at Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes), or discover the beauty of Ullswater (40 minutes) on a steamer cruise around the lake.
