  • Pop-up site next to a South Yorkshire country pub in Midhopestones
  • Longdendale Trail a five-minute walk; Sheffield half an hour’s drive
  • Home-cooked food, real fires and a beer garden; hiking from the site
Fancy the sound of a pop-up at a pub? Now’s your chance to book exactly that, as Ye Olde Mustard Pot in the village of Midhopestones in South Yorkshire is opening its doors to tourers, where they can stay in the large car park with ample space. The advantages of being so close to a pub? The home-cooked food (eat in or order a takeaway) and an excellent range of drinks including a choice of Yorkshire real ales will do for starters. Then there are the three real fires in the lounges – spot on for cosying up when the weather is less than its best. On balmy days, the pub has a large beer garden for alfresco meals and drinks. You get to use the pub loos if needs be too… and crucially you'll be able to walk home easily without any need to worry about who's driving. Bring the kids, bring the dogs – there are strolls up to Underbank Reservoir (15 minutes’ walks) directly from the site. If you’re in need of anything foodie, you can be in Stocksbridge and stocking up at the essentials shop within five minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

After some time contemplating wide-open moorland? Grab the walking boots and head for Howden Clough along the High Stones walking route, or follow the Longdendale Trail from the car park (both five minutes’ drive) up to the historic landmark of Woodhead Railway Station. Fancy a day in the big city? Tour the steam engines and former factories at the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield (half an hour) for a taster of regional heritage, or take the kids to clamber over fire engines at the National Emergency Services Museum. Alternatively, have a wander in the Winter Garden and book an evening performance at the famous Crucible Theatre. To stay more local, tour the formal plantings and parkland at National Trust-owned Wentworth Castle (20 minutes). And if you’re looking for rainy-day ideas (always sensible in Yorkshire), take the kids to run off energy at Jungle Monkeys (five minutes), have nose around the former blacksmiths and railway station at Wortley Top Forge (10 minutes) or spend a happy half day on the water slides at Barnsley Metrodome Waterpark (25 minutes).
