Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The pitches are flat and generously sized with hedges

Disliked: The campsite is unfinished and has been for a couple of years reading other reviews. This could be a great campsite if finishing touches were added (a lock in the tents toilet, shower mats in the showers, paint over the chipboard etc). Very expensive for an unfinished campsite

Disliked: Main road was so loud! We were pitched right next to it, literally just a hedge separating had two nights of disturb sleep, so disappointing as everything else was great

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely site - I imagine the views are spectacular- unfortunately it was very foggy when we stayed so we couldn’t see anything!! - but obviously not the site’s fault! Big pitches that are separated with bushes for privacy which was great, quiet site - there is a pub very close who do amazing food! Good communication with owner 😊

Disliked: My only reason for 4 stars is for the toilet and shower block need updating and no grey waste for our motorhome.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass tent or RV campsite (large)

Liked: Wanted a trial run with my car roof tent and a night away from home with my blind kitty, Zooie. I chose Bolbec Manor due to its location to my home, being only 40mins away. I drove into the wrong pitch initially but was able to drive around to the right one! My fault entirely! Toilets were fab, owners super lovely. Campsite relatively small so easy to drive round. Pub right next door with a great menu. I'm sure amazing views but due to the mist and rain, couldn't see them. 10/10 for our first night in the Tentbox!

Disliked: Nothing! All amazing!

Liked: The site is a bit difficult to find having no sign and access is via the pub car park. Once there, lovely views over the countryside, and close to the Derwent reservoir. Nice hedged pitches. Toilets not many, quite basic but clean. Never used the showers. We enjoyed the stay there.

Disliked: The owners really need to have a sign to indicate its location

Local attractions

An easy – and recommended – first stopoff is Derwent Reservoir, in a handsome setting a few miles from Bolbec Manor. Take a hike (or stroll) on the well-maintained paths to Pow Hill Country Park on the south shore or Millshield picnic area on the north, or take the longer bike route around the reservoir covering some local roads as well. Drop into the visitor centre for info, the key to the bird hide on Derwent’s western edge, or a fishing permit: Derwent is a popular pick for Co Durham trout fishing. Around the North Pennines AONB, it’s well worth the 45-minute drive to Ninebanks near Hexham to access Isaac’s Tea Trail, a circular 37-mile route from there to Alston via Allendale and Nenthead. The same distance to the south and also well worth the drive is the famed waterfall of High Force, where the entire River Tees plunges 21 feet over a cliff; get to the waterfall via the Pennine Way stretch crossing the Moor House Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve. Also to the south, the market town of Bishop Auckland is home to Auckland Castle and its 800 acres of parkland, and to Binchester Roman Fort (this is Hadrian’s Wall land), a Roman fortress on the banks of the River Wear. Somewhat more modern history is at Durham and its must-see stunning cathedral.
