Local attractions

Should you feel the need to drag yourselves away from your gorgeous couples’ retreat (why would you, really?), you might care to explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its nigh-on 40 miles of long, sandy beaches. For remote coastal strolls, head for peaceful dune-backed Druridge Bay (20 minutes’ drive). To combine fresh sea air with a dose of history, Warkworth (15 minutes), Dunstanburgh (20 minutes) and Bamburgh (half an hour) all have mighty castles within reach of their beaches. And talking of castles, Alnwick (15 minutes) provides a full day of fun touring magnificent state rooms, discovering narcotic plants in the Poison Garden and spotting Harry Potter locations. Hardy hikers can look forward to serious yomps up the Simonside Hills (40 minutes) – with wonderful views to the North Sea – or the Cheviots (an hour) on the Scottish border. If that sounds too much like hard work, have a potter along the public footpath that follows the River Coquet into historic Felton (half an hour’s walk), where you can admire the medieval castle ruins and try out the pub.
