  • Dog-friendly site on the Northumberland coast, one mile from the beach
  • In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; near the St Oswald’s Way
  • On-site bar with covered seating area; playground on site
An off-grid, no-frills, quiet and family-friendly campsite, Coast and Castles Campsite is one mile from the Northumberland coast. About 10 minutes' drive from Alnwick and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this dog-friendly site is well-situated for hunting down coves and castles on the coast with the St Oswald’s Way footpath five minutes’ drive away. And what to do first? Will it be munching on kippers in Craster (10 minutes' drive away) or swimming in the sea followed by a warming cuppa on the nearest sandy beach, five minutes’ drive away? Either way, you’ll be in a good place to build up a solid itinerary on the Northumberland coast and then return to the site for a chilled drink at the covered seating area in the on-site bar. With a play area on site too, kids will have their own places to run off any extra energy before the end of the day. And if all that gets you breaking a sweat, there’s a handy amenities block to freshen up. Now for a bite to eat… while you’re out and about, there’s a restaurant beside the bay in Boulmer, five minutes’ drive away, and a couple of cafés in Longhouton, five minutes’ drive away in the opposite direction. There’s a food shop here too, handy for picking up bits and bobs for a chilled-out barbecue back on site.

Powered grass and gravel campervan campsite

Liked: Basic no frills approach and location

Disliked: Meant to be a quiet after 10pm site, but had a very large group of people drinking and playing music well after midnight, saw no staff.

Primitive grass tent campsite (small, two person, adults only)

Liked: Clean, tidy and lots of space for our tent. The bar area was open on an evening which was great!

Disliked: The lights didn’t seem to work on the toilets and showers we were in on the adult camping field.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Very clean site. Toilets and shower blocks looked brand new. Really quiet. There wasn’t much around but you could walk to little coop & cafe in Longhoughton (20mins walk). And other direction there was a nice pub Fishing Boat Inn at Boulmer (30 mins walk). The site had a little bar (the gin tin) that opened in an evening (5-9pm I think). Not too far drive from Alnwick. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked: Toilets were outside and open. But this has its positives, as they don’t smell!!

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Excellent spacious site with great facilities & pop up bar. Great location for walking cycling. Great pub in Boulmer, 2 cafes in Longhoughton. Lovely walk to Alnmouth. Didn't need WiFi. Electric hook up goes off at night but this wasn't an issue for our caravan or our stay.

Powered grass and gravel campervan campsite

Liked: Fantastic site in a great location for exploring the local area. The site was well set out, clean, and had good facilities. The onsite bar was a good addition, with plenty of variety, and with it being situated next to the playpark it was an ideal location for relaxing in the evening whilst the kids continued to play.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Wonderful site with very clean facilities, the Gin Tin was lovely. We only a couple of drinks as it was a very cold breeze on the Friday evening. Very quiet even though there were lots of families on over the weekend. This was our very first attempt at a trip away in our motorhome and our experience was brilliant and fills us with hope and excitement for the future.

Disliked: None

Primitive grass tent campsite (small, two person, adults only)

Liked: Nice clean campsite. Lots of pitch options close to the coast.

Disliked: Shower wasn’t warm enough which on a cold April night isn’t ideal. No benches by the pitches which helps if your camping. No kitchen.

Local attractions

Set your compass towards the sea… whether it’s walking and cycling around Seaton Point (10 minutes’ drive), watersports down at Alnmouth beach (10 minutes) or dipping in and out of the sand dunes at Warkworth beach (15 minutes), there are plenty of coastal landscapes to choose from around here. As for the beach towns, Craster (15 minutes) is all about the kippers and art galleries. If you plan ahead, you could book a fishing trip from the harbour – or make a day of it and check out the National Trust’s Dunstanburgh Castle (15 minutes) nearby to see what life used to be like in the 14th-century fortress. Another commanding castle resides in Alnwick (10 minutes), but this town is also a sure bet for browsing bookshelves in the bookshops, ambling around gardens or rolling onto the steam railway. Those of you who fancy another beach day might want to go to its sandy shore or continue the coastal party in Amble (20 minutes), where beach huts, fish shacks, canoeing, kayaking and boating make for a classic day out.
