  • Well-maintained family-run site next to Thornton Steward Reservoir
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, 10 mins' drive from Jervaulx Abbey
  • Fishing passes available; great stargazing and wildlife-spotting
With the Dales rolling out all around and a reservoir that catches some spectacular sunsets, you’re in for some splendid scenery and wildlife at The Dales Camping and Caravanning. This place is excellently rural and set on the edge of Thornton Steward Reservoir in an excellent Yorkshire Dales location between Bedale and Leyburn (and around 10 minutes’ drive from each). This is a handy spot to get to as it’s not far from the A1(M), and a handy spot for getting out and about too: Coverdale, Swaledale and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within a short drive. Cyclists have plenty of fine routes to choose from, including following in the tyre tracks of the Tour de Yorkshire, which has run past here before. Being so close to the reservoir also means easy access for fishing (with day passes available to pre-order) or spending some time wildlife-spotting (oystercatchers, buzzards, owls and bats are regular visitors, and there’s also the occasional osprey and sea eagle). The rural setting is also splendid for stargazing: there were great views of the comet Neowise from here in 2020. Several thoughtful touches have been thrown in at this site, including fire grates for your campfires and barbecues, a custom-built timber amenities block (with toilets, showers and a hot-water washing-up area) and wheelbarrows (sweetly named after the family's children) for carting your kit around so the site can remain car-free. Dogs are welcome on site as long as they’re kept on a lead and owners clean up after them and dispose of mess in the bins provided.

Wensleydale 3 bedroom safari tent (pet friendly)

Liked: Fantastic safari tent, clean and cosy. Shower was amazing, beds were comfortable and bed linen was weather appropriate. We loved the stove, having it on really kept the tent warm. Fantastic weekend that we will remember despite the weather. Thank you

Disliked: Website said there was an oven, I checked before we left and there wasn’t so we packed the bbq pizza oven which we were able to use on the gas stovetop which was an instant solve to our problem.

Wensleydale 3 bedroom safari tent (pet friendly)

Liked: Fabulous accommodation with some really quirky touches. There was even a little play space for children and a selection of treats and towels for the dogs. The host was so lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming. The weather wasn’t great but we still had a brilliant time because the area is so beautiful with plenty to do and the safari tent was so cosy.

Wensleydale 3 bedroom safari tent (pet friendly)

Liked: Loved our stay in the Wensleydale safari tent! We’re avid campers but this is our first time ‘Glamping’…what a rare treat not to have to set up and take down. Really cosy and comfy, open fire, big comfy beds for all, plenty of seating, clean and tastefully decorated! Lovely quiet site (only the three safari tents booked, camping field closed at the moment) Close to lots of local attractions. We visited fountains abbey and brimham rocks.

Disliked: Only a gas hob in the kitchen, really missed an oven/grill. Could do with a little step stool in the bathroom for the kids to reach the basin. That’s it!!
