  • Friendly site eight miles from York
  • Surrounded by a network of public footpaths
  • Well-equipped play area with zipwire and giant draughts
'All singing, all dancing' is what the friendly folk at York Meadows Caravan Park eight miles from the grand old centre of York say about their site, and after a quick perusal of the site facilities you'll likely fully agree. The location here is pretty splendid too, tucked down a private lane near the village of Sheriff Hutton, close to York but also the Yorkshire coast, and surrounded by a network of public footpaths including the Ebor Way, Wold Way and Centenary Way. (If you fancy wandering further, ask the owners for their suggestions, as they're happy hikers of these parts.) Don't want to walk too far? Wander into the friendly village instead for the village shop and to investigate the two pubs. However. The York Meadows folk also point out that guests might not want to leave the park at all… The play area is just grand, with swings, zipwire, a climbing frame and a slide, as well as outdoor table tennis, giant draughts, and snake and ladders; meanwhile, the reception shop sells all you might have forgotten such as bread and milk as well as burgers and bangers: yes, barbecues are allowed here… Don't fancy cooking? Ring one of the local takeaways and get your dinner delivered right to the site, or try a couple of the York Meadows's team's recommendations like the Highwayman Inn in Sheriff Hutton, selling homemade food using fresh local produce, or Thompsons Fish Restaurant and takeaway on Malton Road: anywhere that's won awards for its fish and chips might sound pretty grand to you too.

Ian H. 1 review

All-weather powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked This was out first time at York meadows with our new tentbox we are seasoned campers and usually use a Kampa air tent but we were getting fed up of the pack away especially in the rain. This is a great site not too far from York by taxi or car we used Uber and paid £14 there and £10.50 back. The site has everything you need apart from a bar/pub but the local village has one called the Highwayman which is within walking distance and the food is fantastic. The staff on the site are so friendly and helpful even down to setting us up with a pitch with a bit more shelter as it was quite windy and because we had a tentbox it was a good call. All in all we had a great 2 days at York Meadows.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, Peter.

We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that our wardens helped make you feel welcome from the moment you arrived. It's also great to know that you found our facilities clean and comfortable, and that the play area and local visitor information were useful during your visit.

Thank you as well for your feedback regarding the phone and Wi-Fi signal. Unfortunately, due to our rural location, mobile reception can sometimes be affected depending on network provider. We appreciate your comments and will continue to explore ways to improve connectivity for our guests where possible.

We hope to welcome you back again soon for another enjoyable stay.

Local attractions

Sheriff Hutton is a pretty place to start when considering the countryside around here. And then one must go Yorkwards, to the splendid city with York Minster, cobbled streets, York Dungeon, York Railway Museum, the Jorvik Viking Centre… Spend some time too among the market, shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs of the Shambles, the teeny streets that are among the most snapped shots of York. Plenty of indoor options are around if the weather decides to be a tad inconsiderate: you could dash to an indoor play centre nearby or take the tour at York's Chocolate Story (yes, tastings are included…) Bigger parks like Flamingo Land and Lightwater Valley are in the area too. Golf? Greens surrounding the park include Sandburn Hall (with other activities too), York Golf Club, Fulford Golf Club, Easingwold Golf Club and Ampleforth Golf Club. Fishing? Also popular in these parts: cast off locally at Pottery Pond, Birkdale Farm, and Brickyard Farm Lakes. And of course as it's Yorkshire, there are also piles of abbeys, castles, stately homes, historic houses and museums to visit – without even mentioning the moors or the Yorkshire coast…
