  • Simple, well-kept North Yorkshire site under a mile from Huby
  • A 20-minute drive to York or the Howardian Hills
  • Dogs and kids welcome; good bus services from the village
If you like the idea of a rural break but also value the convenience of having village facilities within a couple of minutes’ drive, find yourself a space at Fox Covert. This North Yorkshire site is in a proper countryside spot surrounded by green farmland, and it’s just a mile from the village of Huby – for when you feel the need for a shop, or want to visit a pub (with food), a Chinese takeaway or a fish and chip shop. The village is a handy hub for various things, but it’s not the only urban option around here: the market town of Easingwold is about 10 minutes’ drive away (for more pubs, shops and places to eat, plus a twice-weekly market), and it will take you about 20 minutes to get to York to visit its historic attractions. Both destinations can be reached by bus from the village. If it’s all about the rural activities for you, you’ll also be well served here: there’s fishing just up the road at Redwood Park (five minutes’ drive), and plenty of scenic walks in the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes). You can catch up with fluffy alpacas and impressive birds of prey at nearby animal parks, or seek out historic attractions – from Roman sites, to grand stately homes. Back at base, it’s a laidback setup with simple and well-maintained facilities in the form of a couple of toilets and showers, plus plenty of space for kids and dogs to run around.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Fairly quiet, spacious stay. Lovely local pub down the road (1mile walk)

Disliked Only one toilet had a toilet seat out of the 2, and even that was broken! The shower was constantly locked after trying several times throughout our stay. Disappointing as we booked due to having these facilities.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Rebbecca sorry about your stay , when we opened on wed both toilet seats were intact as they had been done before opening i am very sorry about this .with it being busy and easter we could not get the plumber out they are now replaced with having the grass cut the amount of footfall made it inpossible to keep up with it but i assure you my husband tried many thanks for your feedback .Val x

Didn’t expect much for 20pn but usable facilities would have been nice

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Plenty of space to pitch up, beautiful dark skies for star gazing

Disliked Pitch near the road was noisy at night, showers had no privacy and drains were blocked and the neither of the 2 toilets had toilet seats or toilet roll.
Dogs off lead and load music from other campers

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry about that the toilet seats they were done before we opened on wed ,if you had rung me about loud music i would have sorted it .dogs also as this is not on we are very strict about dogs and have a sign up, also they are told on arrival if you could private message me which they were please Val x

Liked You can have a fire , leaving

Disliked Toilets are very small, one Toliet seat missing on arrival the other off the next day, the step up into the Toliet is rather high not good if you had a disability. Val was rather abrupt that I'd forgotten the cover that attaches my awning to the camper . Then proceed to tell me I was taken up to much pitch space . On pitch up it says 7m x10m I was no where near that . I got the feeling if your face fits you can do what you want ! Like the caravans opposite me having a gazebo up , the tent at the end of us been twice the size , nothing said . I've never felt so unwelcome on a site in all the time I've been camping .

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi thankyou for the review the toilet seats were both on on the day we opened wed as we had them done by our plumber ,they are the same size as any other toilets, we could not get a plumber out over easter.the people in the other feild paid for there gazebo s i only asked you to move your windbreakers in also a awning is attached to your van which yours was not . I do not measure caravan s the large tents pay extra .you had a firepit given to you when you asked for one , when i said hello to you you ignored me no one is treated differant i am sorry you felt that way and appoligize.

A great little site in easy reach of York. Would definitely return

Primitive grass campsite

Liked - Polite welcome by the owner to get checked in and really welcoming to my young son
- Large open field with choice over where to pitch
- Toilet and showers more than amenable for a short stay
- One of very few campsites that permit use of your own firepit
- Easy access to York and surrounds

Disliked Nothing - would happily return

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Big flat field. Can park next to pitch. Easy to find and well signposted. Friendly owner. Clean toilet block. Quiet (I was the only person staying) Hedges hide the field well from the passing cars. Horses in the next field. Lots of paths nearby.

Disliked Traffic noise as next to the road but luckily not many cars late at night. No footpath to the nearby village but not their fault. No phone signal at all.

Liked We loved the campsite and the area it is in. The owner Val made us feel very welcome and was so knowledgeable about places to go, giving us some great suggestions. Her love of the area is evident in the way she speaks about it which is lovely. The site is well kept and clean and we will definitely be returning.

Local attractions

With more than 100 residents, the York Bird of Prey Centre (five minutes’ drive) is a top spot to learn about the habits of owls, hawks, eagles and other raptors. In addition to flight displays (where audience participation is encouraged), the centre runs a number of experiences that allow visitors to handle the birds, including walks and photography days. If you’re into dramatic ruins, check out those of Byland Abbey (15 minutes), built in the 12th century and closed by Henry VIII in 1538, after which it fell into decline. The scale of this religious complex is humbling, and there’s also an impressive collection of medieval floor tiles. The Minster in York (20 minutes) is a soaring edifice with remarkable stained-glass windows and far-reaching views from the Central Tower. Stroll along the narrow medieval street known as the Shambles, then head to the National Railway Museum to see vintage locomotives or to the Jorvik Viking Centre to delve into the early history of the city.
