  • Glamping on a North Yorkshire farm 15 minutes’ drive from Filey
  • Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast and Scarborough 25 minutes’ drive
  • Fully equipped bell tents with covered outdoor kitchen
Merry Dale Bell Tents might be part of Humble Bee Farm, but there’s nothing humble about their glamping credentials. Surrounded by the glorious Yorkshire Wolds, this site 15 minutes' drive from the seaside town of Filey has all you need for a family-friendly holiday: not just comfortable bell tents (more about these in a minute), but also a football area and an indoor play barn to keep the kids entertained. Mind you, the children might well prefer to make friends with the resident animals, which include dogs, donkeys, alpacas and Tilly, a Shetland pony that you can take for walks. (Tilly is a popular girl with a busy schedule, so be sure to book this activity in advance.) There are also happy chickens on site, and you can help the farmers collect their free-range eggs. But back to those luxe bell tents, which are decorated with fairy lights and bunting, and scattered with colourful cushions: they sleep four people (on a double bed with a real mattress, and two futons). You’ll need to bring your own bed linen for the single beds, though forgetful types can hire a bedding package on site. A woodburning stove keeps the chill of the Yorkshire nights at bay, and all the essentials for cooking are also in place – from a mini fridge to a fully stocked crockery box. Each bell tent also comes with its own sheltered outside kitchen with a barbecue and gas stove, and the communal facilities block has showers and toilets. When you’re ready to start exploring, a nature trail starts right by the reception. There are also paths for all levels of fitness in North Riding Forest Park (35 minutes’ drive), or you can go for a bracing seafront walk at Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast (25 minutes).

Lily of the Valley bell tent

Liked: The farm itself is nice but the site doesn't make the most of the surroundings. Fish & chip takeaway near the Esso garage is ok but the staff are moody. Good location for exploring Scarborough and Flamborough.

Disliked: Everything was ok, but for the price we expected more than ok. The layout of the site meant the single road was really busy and the bottom end is like a wind tunnel. The contactless check-in might suit some but we missed a human touch. The tent was poorly equipped with no forks and again a lack of personality. No phone signal also makes it tricky to contact the company and £4 for WiFi is steep.

Thistledown Feather bell tent

Liked: Bell tents were very cosy Well equipped Gteat staff

Disliked: Wood was expensive and wasn't enough for the night. We may have been unlucky by getting more kindling than logs though

Local attractions

Scarborough (25 minutes’ drive) has a large sandy beach skirted by fish and chip shops and ice-cream parlours. Take a walk up to the remains of the medieval castle, on a grassy headland with coastal views, then descend on the other side to check out Peasholm Park, with its Japanese-style garden and boating lake. Spend a few hours climbing and bouncing on the inflatable structures at North Yorkshire Water Park (25 minutes), which also has a quiet area where you can have a go at paddleboarding or kayaking. Experience the vastness of North York Moors National Park (40 minutes) on a hike, taking in archaeological remains like the Wheeldale Roman Road, and natural features like the Hole of Horcum and dramatic waterfalls. Finish the day with a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
