  • Family-run riverside site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Minutes from the Coast to Coast Walk and the Pennine Way
  • Angling and walking along the nearby River Swale
Perfect peace, top-notch Yorkshire scenery, and cosy berths in bright, roomy pods: pack a bag and make for Swaleview Park. This friendly, family-run wildlife haven at the head of the Swale Valley is less than 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Richmond. The River Swale passes right next to the park, making it a popular spot for anglers to stay; walkers hail it too, for leisurely strolls along the river banks into Richmond or bigger ventures up the surrounding hills and dales. The site's sturdy, timber-framed pods are fully insulated and heated, and come with warm interior lighting and electricity. There’s ample space for two adults and two kids in each, and each pod also comes with its own sheltered terrace for cooking, eating or sitting and soaking up the peace and views of the Swale valley. The pods are handily placed near to the washrooms, where there are plentiful hot showers and bright clean facilities, and to the washing-up area for pots and pans. If you fancy a break from self catering, there's a wealth of pubs with grub along with cafés, restaurants and takeaways in Richmond.

Local attractions

If you're a cyclist who likes a challenge, Swaleview Park lies close to the route of the 2014 Tour de France, while the long distance trails of the Coast to Coast Walk – a 192 mile-long route passing passes through the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park – and the Pennine Way are both minutes from the site. A number of cracking good walks and bike trails are start or pass through the nearby village of Reeth (10 minutes' drive), where Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, two of the county's most northerly dales join up. It's the same distance to Richmond, for visits to the Norman castle, the ruins of Easby Abbey and the Green Howards Regimental Museum, nosing round the ancient cobbled market for picnic treats to tuck into by the river or taking in the waterfalls. Further afield, there's the tiny cathedral city of Ripon (45 minutes), also worth a look for its Workhouse Museum, Prison and Police Museum and the birdwatching opportunities of Quarry Moor Nature Reserve. If you're feeling peckish after all that wandering, make your way over to the Wensleydale Creamery, also 45 minutes, to learn all about the legendary Yorkshire cheese... and then eat it.
