  • Simple woodland and meadow site near Pocklington, East Yorkshire
  • Five minutes’ drive to Allerthorpe Lakeland Park; York half an hour
  • Hot tub and firepits for hire, plus a garden room with games
This is no-frills East Yorkshire camping with bonuses, for The Spinney Wild Camping sits on a nine-acre site consisting of oak woodland and open meadow, with plenty of room for dogs (on leads) and kids (no leads required) to have a run around – plus it’s close to all manner of watersports and country walks at Allerthorpe (fIve minutes’ drive). On arrival at this laid-back spot, there’s another bonus: you can choose where to pitch up, either in a woodland glade or on the mown field. At this point, please note the site is off-grid, so torches are essential – although there is running water and a simple compost toilet, a separate urinal and a pot-washing area with cold water available. Yet more bonuses of a stay at The Spinney include the garden room, complete with a sofa, blankets and games, so you can cosy up in inclement weather (this is England), and when the sun shines, you can hire the hot tub and watch the stars come up with something chilled in hand. Firepits are available for hire too (note that you're not permitted to bring your own firepit or fuel), so you can get down to some barbecuing, but otherwise, there are plenty of local country pubs if you fancy a change of scenery.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The best campsite I've ever been to! The owners are super nice and welcoming, Neil showed us around on arrival and made sure we picked the best pitch for our needs. Fire pit hire is only £10 including fire wood which is a bargain, it also had a grill on so we could cook our meals on the fire. The campsite is well maintained, very peaceful, it has compost toilets (which are amazing and very clean) and a shower tent, which was really easy to use. There's also simple pot wash area, a small cabin with armchairs and a few board games, a picnic bench and 2 hammocks to use, also a hot tub available to hire. There were horses over the fence, right were we pitched our tent, which were super friendly, they came up to us to greet us too :) we spotted plenty of wild animals roaming around as well. As this was my partner's very first camping experience I'm happy to say it won't be the last, we will definitely be back. Thank you for this great experience. Kind regards, Barbara & Laura

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Wishing the world had a couple more people like Neil & Cherie. They’ve created a lovely, outdoor oasis, focusing on quality of experience. Where commercial campsites would easily host 2x the number of pitches, The Spinney makes sure everyone has a truly ‘wild’ camping experience which means plenty of room. Pocklington, the town nearby, has plenty of pubs & cafes so you get the best of both worlds.

Liked The site was beautiful, great facilities and amazing people that run it, always up for a chat and want to help, they provided us with a deck chair and wind breaker. Lovely and quiet and a nice pub 30 minute walk away. We will 100% be back and can’t recommend enough.

Disliked Nothing, it was flawless.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Spinney Wild Camping place was really nice and upon arrival we were greeted by Neil and Cherie. They were very friendly and individually took us around to show talk us through the site layout and facilities (even directing us to where the sunset would be happening later that evening), as they did for everyone else staying there. They were helpful in providing a wheelbarrow for us to move our camping gear which was so useful to have.

We were there for a practice camping night close to home to try out new camping gear. The site was lovely with a choice of camping in the open meadow or in the wooded area for a bit of shade. It was nice and quiet as it’s got a maximum of 10 pitches allowed which makes the experience a lot more pleasant and personal as it’s not cramped or got too many people. It was good for the kids to play in the hammocks and the lounge area as well as with all the other kids of other people staying there.

The compost toilets were far better than any I’ve used before. For the cost of £25 a night it was very reasonably priced. Plus the hiring of the fire pit was only £10 and that included kindling, a bag of wood (which lasted us about 2 hours for our fire), a lighter, a heatproof glove, heatproof mat, and a bucket of water to keep any drinks cool.

From the manager: We are so pleased you enjoyed the experience and everything went well with your new gear, looking forward to next time.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We loved our stay at The Spinney wild camping, we had a Spacious, peaceful and pretty secluded pitch with a view of horses in the next field, everything was so well kept and nick and Cherie made sure we had a fantastic stay, making excellent recommendations, including Atlas sandwiches in pocklington and nearby walks and pubs. We would also recommend visiting pool bridge farm for an amazing wild swimming and sauna experience. We made use of the fire pit and the hammocks, there’s also a hot tub you can rent which we would consider doing in the future when we visit again.
