  • Grass pitches on an arable farm with far-reaching East Yorkshire views
  • Ten minutes’ drive to Oakhill Nature Reserve; 45 minutes from York
  • Wildlife walks on a secluded site, shops and pubs five minutes’ drive
Sitting in the Vale of York, Dobella Lane Farm makes a great base for couples, friends and families keen to explore right across Yorkshire. With handy access to the M18, York, Leeds, Sheffield and Hull are all very accessible – and all within an hour's drive. The pitches here are part of a garden site on an arable farm with glorious wide-open spaces, plus plenty of walks and wildlife areas to potter around. Harvesting takes place in summer, so be warned that things can get a little dusty around. Once the crops are cleared, the fields are open for you to walk on (please ask first though) and your dogs are very welcome too – as long as they get on with the resident top dog Toffee. The pitches are grass standing, although the soil is sandy so they generally stay hard. If you do get stuck in the winter months, there is always a tractor on hand to pull you out. Electricity, outside loos, water points and green toilet disposal are also available. Sitting on the banks of the River Aire, Rawcliffe village (five minutes’ drive) has got plenty to offer, from a foodie pub to a raft of takeaways and a handy convenience store for replenishing supplies.

Local attractions

Fancy a city sightseeing day out with the kids? There are several at hand, and they are all easily accessed from the M18. You can admire the Humber Bridge (35 minutes’ drive) as you head for Hull (50 minutes) to feed the sharks at The Deep, or treat youngsters to the sights and sounds of Viking-era York (45 minutes) at Jorvik Viking Centre. Turn west for Leeds (50 minutes) and jousting tournaments at the Royal Armouries, or exercise the dog on an outdoor artwork tour at the riverside Yorkshire Sculpture Park (45 minutes). On any rainy days, hands-on games at Sheffield’s National Videogame Museum (50 minutes) might keep teenagers distracted from the weather. There’s no need to drive so far every day though, as it’s only five minutes’ drive to coarse fishing on Sugar Mill Ponds, and you can be on a golf course within 10 minutes. Oakhill Nature Reserve (also 10 minutes) has peaceful woodland walks leading to newt-filled ponds, and is extra-pretty in spring when the snowdrops are blooming.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The friendly owner let me have my choice of pitches. I found a secluded corner out of the way (I hate putting my little tent up between big fancy motorhomes) and had a peaceful evening.

Disliked: Nothing. As long as you appreciate it's a basic site, there's nothing to dislike. You can hear the motorway, but just imagine it's the ocean and you soon forget it's there.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: One night stopover in campervan. Tidy and clean, EHU, very quiet and plenty of space on peg. Meet and greet! Polite owner, we even bought some plum jam to try. Chinese takeaway and pizza shop only 1 mile away. No issues. Near motorway but could barely hear it, definitely didnt bother us. Would stop again.

Disliked: Toilets are portaloos. One male and one female. Not a major issue as campsite is small. They were clean and maintained.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for choosing us and leaving such a nice review. After recent ones we felt that our campsite wasn't delivering. We've added portaloos to cope with more campers as previous campers were not happy about queuing for a toilet. Motorway has been there for a long time - can't do anything about that. Look forward to seeing you again.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Not much at all

Disliked: Poor facilities no signage Festival toilets Covered in mole hills Caravan, car, van and trailer graveyard Old woman that took the payment, made it seem like such an inconvenience to have to deal with us. Displaying a caravan and camping club sign.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your business. Given that the charge is under £20 / night I'm not actually sure what you are expecting. I would suggest staying in a premier inn going forward as they have all the facilities that you need. Festival toilets - yes - to take the strain off the septic tank so that it wouldn't smell and you wouldn't have to queue for a toliet. Molehills - its a field - there are moles - these could appear and have done over night. Graveyard - well some might say that - others choose to pay to store them away from their houses. We can't force them to clean them. Old Woman - extremely rude - you wouldn't want people talking about your mother like that - I would suggest you temper your language. C&C club was our original exemption.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: The electricity

Disliked: Very unorganised site. Lady wasn’t there when we arrived. Toilets are portaloos. No washing facilities unless you want a sink outside with no hot water. Ground not flat. Made move the tent 3 times. No walks as advertised. Boy racers on the road at night. You can hear the motorway. Would never go again

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your business - Though not sure which occasion you visited as you choose not to leave your name. Given you didn't state what time you would be arriving then how can you expect a small site to be there all the time? Toilets are portaloos in order to separate the sexes and give more facilities as well as taking the pressure off the septic tank - we are off grid. Ground not flat - not sure what you are expecting here - given it is a paddock, cut and maintained grass to keep it short. Other than a few mole hills no clue how much flatter you'd like it... Even putting greens aren't flat. Walks are down the lane and around - assume you had a map? Given you had a map then you would have seen the motorway - who knew that people wanted to leave Yorkshire to go West?? This is also well documented. Boy racers - yep there is a X3 that does speed down the lane - this isn't anything to do with our facility and I'm sure there are people drive fast down your road too?? Maybe in future you book a Premier Inn or perhaps the Savoy?

Lovely and welcoming host. Chilled atmosphere. Loved it!

Liked: The lady was really friendly and welcoming. Plenty of space Clean Quiet

Disliked: The portable toilet Lack of washing facilities, the portable was not suitable to have a wash. Lack of washing up facilities , but the lady did say she was having a sink and drainer put in

From the manager: Thank you for choosing our site to stay. It is awesome that you chose us. We now have new washing facilities!! They do the job and already people are commenting that they are very helpful. Should you wish to visit again, then you will be able to check them out. Thanks again and maybe see you again??

Liked: We loved it here so much we are coming back again next weekend. The lady who owns it is so lovely. The toilets which are portaloos are really clean.

Disliked: We think there might be a wasps nest in the tree we were parked under.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: So pleased your family enjoyed the time at Dobella. We've now added a washing up station. We've good availability in August for you to visit again.
