  • Pop-up campsite among woodlands at a Co. Durham working farm
  • Durham city centre 15 minutes' drive; 20 minutes to the coast
  • Dog-friendly site; choose from main field or wilder orchard pitches
Want to spend some time deep in the delightful Co.Durham countryside? Don’t particularly want to have to make a long diversion from the main road to get there? Book yourselves a space at Dragonfly Camping – this splendid spot is part of a working farm surrounded by woodlands, and yet it’s no more than 15 minutes’ drive from either the A1 or the A19. You’ll probably start to notice the peaceful atmosphere as you make your way down the farm track to the camping area. At this point you’ll need to make a choice – will you set up in the main field (a popular choice for groups and families because of its open space and proximity to facilities), or among the trees in the Walnut Orchard for more of a secluded wild camping-style experience? Either way, you’ll have access to toilets and showers, along with water points in the camping fields. You’ll be allowed to bring your dog along too – perhaps to accompany you as you wander through the woods and grasslands around the site, looking out to see what sort of wildlife you can spot. Once you’ve stretched your legs on site, there’s much more to explore in the area – including outings to the Durham Dales, the Durham Heritage Coast and, of course, the city of Durham itself, which is about 15 minutes’ drive away. You won’t have to go that far for your picnic supplies though, as you can pick those up at the convenience store five minutes’ drive away in Wheatley Hill (which also has a café and a couple of takeaways).

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Great grounds with plenty of choice of where you want to pitch your tent. Matt was great and gave us recommendations for food and activities to do the following day and just an all round happy bloke. Toilets not too far from the camping parking lot, toilets were clean and overall good facilities. Logs for the fire were decently priced one bag gave us around 3-4 hours of burning and this was on a windy day. Short drive to nearby shops and pubs.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Everything - quirky little pop up campsite, not been open long, fantastic reclaimed building materials for the toilet and shower blocks, beautiful camp ground, the orchard was picture perfect and a great place to camp in a little tent. Two massive camping fields for bigger tents. You can camp anywhere and the owner Matt was great, chatty and helpful. Wood £5 a bag and more than enough perfect an evening fire. It’s a brilliant spot & would be the perfect campsite for a relaxed chill summer festival of some local bands or DJ’s. The place isn’t one of those campsites with loads of rules, you’re encouraged to be respectful and nice to everyone but apart from that you’re free to just relax and enjoy yourself. Beautiful little camp ground - we will be back ❤️

Disliked: Nothing. (Future improvements for the overall campsite would be a covered over space Nate the toilets with some communal fridges to keep your milk and bits in)

Liked: Everything about this place was great! Matt the owner of the site was welcoming form the moment we arrived. He showed us around and we picked a nice little pitch in the paddock. Great place, dogs welcome and I must say we really enjoyed our stay. I would definitely recommend and stay again!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: What a beautiful site, pick your spot in an open field or even the Orchard. Great location only a 4 minute drive to the village of Kelloe, or 15/20 minute walk. On site there is access to walk amongst the woods and just go for a little adventure. Matt couldn't do enough for you, Such a nice and friendly person. Always saying hello and available for a chat. The Showers pressure and heat is spot on. Multiple Water point and sinks around the site. I can't praise this place enough, I'm not sure if it was because the site has everything you need to enjoy an amazing break or the fact the brothers running it are such nice people. Probably a bit of both. Went Solo on this trip and Booked up next weekend for the Family. Also like to add that the Village of Kelloe has multiple trails and History for you to discover.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Dragonfly Camping, was just perfect for me. I love wild camping - the Walnut Orchard area was enchanting. Rustic, natural, peaceful. The owners (brothers) are welcoming, helpful and unobtrusive. I wish you both good luck with your ventures, you have a great site. As with new campsites, there are many ongoing projects; which when developed will add extra magic to this site. Really hope you decide to have a “music festival” style gathering next summer. I will be returning here, on my own and with family. The main touring area is good for families with children - plenty of space to run around. The Walnut Orchard (Wild site) more secluded discreet areas, offering privacy and a window into the world of Stoats, Squirrels and other wild creatures.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The perfect place to completely relax, unwind and reset. We had an absolutely magical stay here and really did not want to leave. We stayed in the orchard surrounded by beautiful scenery and Matt couldn’t have done enough to ensure we had the best stay. The facilities were lovely and clean and the shower powerful and warm. We honestly couldn’t fault it and are already planning our return. Thank you so much Matt for welcoming us to your beautiful home, it really was a special trip to remember!

Disliked: Everything was perfect!
