  • Unique coastal park with safari tents in an old Norfolk brickyard
  • A five-minute drive to Holkham Nature Reserve and 10 to Holkham Hall
  • Cob, pizza oven and bar; stargazing and birdwatching on site
Proudly sporting the accolade of being named as the sixth-best wild campsite in the UK by The Daily Telegraph and a similar nod from The Wild Guide, The Lost Norfolk Brickyard is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With enough room to relax and get close to nature in the mixture of woods and open space, it’s a fine choice for folk who want plenty of privacy and seclusion. As well as scenic surroundings, the Peterstone park also has excellent facilities: guests can cook at the cob and pizza oven, which serve as a focal point for social times next to the old Norfolk barn, or unwind with a drink at the bar without any worries about driving home. Outdoors, you might like to sit and birdwatch or stargaze – several large birds of prey (red kites, buzzards, marsh harriers and the like) often fly overhead and the area’s recognised by The Royal Astronomical Society as having one of the lowest light pollution levels in the UK. If you feel like getting further out into the countryside, it's a short cycle ride to Holkham beach on a scenic off-road trip through a nature reserve, and it takes about 15 minutes to reach the 18th-century country house of Holkham Hall. For more culture, the neighbouring town of Wells-next-the-Sea (around a five-minute drive) has an arts centre with exhibitions spaces, a cinema and a theatre. Back at the park, the well-kept showers and loos are cleaned regularly and each safari tent has its own separate loo and shower with a washing-up station.

The Bothy cottage / chalet / bungalow (two person)

Liked: Loved the bothy. Gorgeous brick hut with lovely log burner and very cute mezanine bedroom. Nice shower too. Tim and catherine were fabulous hosts and great characters. The barn is a great extra shared space for larger family groups.

The Bothy cottage / chalet / bungalow (two person)

Liked: The Bothy was an adorable stay, it had everything you'd need for a short trip away, apart from a kitchen. The owners were lovely and welcoming.

Disliked: Having a kitchen or more kitchen utensils would have been easier but we made do with our trangia fine anyway.

Local attractions

Brancaster beach, another of the north Norfolk coast's finest stretches of sand, is nearby (a 15-minute drive) and pretty Norfolk villages with shops to browse, pubs to drink at and views of the sea are all around. Of particular interest are Blakeney, Cley and Burnham Market, as well as Holt with its historic market. Speaking of history, a host of heritage spots are in the area – such as Binham (20 minutes), with its ruined priory, along with the Langham Dome anti-aircraft gunnery dome and the stately home of Blickling Hall. Back at the coast, there are plenty of ways to get on the water – from kayak hire and ferry rides to seal-watching tours and fishing trips.
