  • Spacious 12-acre family campsite in rural Norfolk
  • Two miles from Mundesley beach; North Walsham 10 minutes' drive
  • Kids' play area, indoor seating and pop-up bar
Rock up for a roomy rural site thatā€™s two miles from the north Norfolk coastā€¦ MADRA is a green and grassy spot thatā€™s far from busy roads and big cities ā€“ in all, you'll have 12 acres to pitch up and explore in, plus lots of adjacent country footpaths and bike rides a short distance from base to get to hiking or pedalling as you please. The vibe here is laidback, relaxed and family-friendly ā€“ the kids have a playground where they can run around and blow off some steam, while a clubhouse and pop-up bar is on hand for drinks or for those of you who are looking for somewhere to chill away from the elements. Barbecues are welcome too, and there are plenty of picnic tables around the place to get set up, so it shouldn't be a bother to find somewhere to eat alfresco as a group. So, where is this spot? Well, MADRA is in a small village called Knapton, and from there, itā€™s easy to catch regular bus services to local seaside towns like Mundesley (two miles) and Cromer (nine miles). You're also very close to the pretty market town of North Walsham (roughly 10 minutes' drive), whereā€™s a train station, pubs, restaurants, fish and chip shops, a public swimming pool and a bowling alley.

Local attractions

You might not be able to get back to the real Victorian seaside, but Mundesley (five minutesā€™ drive) was popular with the public back then, and itā€™s easy to tell why when you visit its paddle-worthy beach and pretty village. Cromer (20 minutes) is another of those sweet seaside spots ā€“ get your hands on the crab specialities, catch a show in the pavilion on the pier or go for a snorkel from the shore. Those of you who want to source some more tasty eats will surely find some in the market town of North Walsham (10 minutes) or Norwich city centre (35 minutes). But to embark on more water-based activities, there are the Norfolk Broads inland, and Wroxham (25 minutes) will be your closest spot to hire out a boat and make some headway. Grab a bicycle instead over on the Blickling Estate (25 minutes). Itā€™s an easy pedal past the hall and the parklandā€™s lake, grandstand and other little features. Holkham Hall (an hour) has both bicycle and boat hire too, as well as high ropes for those of you who want to take on some new heights, literally. For more of the treetops, playtime at BeWILDerwood Norfolk (25 minutes) will be in a treehouse-themed playground.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The open ness of the field was lovely, leaving families space to play games etc. Level pitches. The site is run by some lovely people, nothing was too much trouble, and they checked in on me to make sure I was okay. Clubhouse served food, hot & cold beverages all very reasonably priced.

Disliked: Toilets/shower basic, not the cleanest. The sink for washing up only had cold running water, although not a huge issue, as I boiled the kettle before hand.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely flat field, showers had good water pressure, good playground for the children.

Disliked: Facilities were very dirty, to the point I cleaned them myself on day as I couldnā€™t stand it any longer. Very large, very loud groups permitted and no curfew on noise. Showers were grim to say the least and no hot water in the washing up facility.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Oh dear obviously you didn't clean them very well as your friend has given a 6 aswell due to dirty toilets what a coincidence both 6 but lots of 10s for clean facilities on other reviews staying at the time as yourselves I'm afraid you were very rude and how you spoke to Tim was unnecessary hope your cleaning skills approve so your friend can give you a 10 review on your happy hols next year šŸ˜‰

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Our 3rd year here, the location is perfect for us, the site is lovely and chilled...quite basic but has everything you could need. Great value little community site.

Disliked: Unable to use our microcamper this year, understandable wanting to keep cars off pitches in a wet summer but emailed ahead to check and got no response, so had to rely on tent.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review I have looked everywhere for and emails or messages about a microvan and I'm afraid I can't find any did you mention to Tim about it as I know we're you were you could have had a van there no trouble

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Well kept field, nice flat pitch. We liked that cars were parked away from the pitches, felt our children were safe to wander. Cheap food and drinks in the bar on site. Play park a big hit with our children, as well as the bouncy castle. Good location for exploring local beaches. Good for the price.

Disliked: Electric hook up a bit unreliable. Only one working shower. Only cold water for washing up.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review please look at other reviews about shower and washing up facilities should answer your dislike as for our electrics they are serviced and maintained can't help the rain I'm afraid

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Brilliant, inexpensive campsite that was an excellent base for our holiday. Everyone was very friendly from the moment we arrived (fantastic fish and chips recommendation, Tim!!), and there was a playground for the kids to play on. Lovely atmosphere, it felt very safe to let the kids roam. Facilities were clean and maintained, clubhouse had a lot on whenever we fancied it. Showers were warm and welcome - more than enough time to get clean for just Ā£1! There was absolutely enough here to keep us happy for our stay, and for a fab price. Thank you for making our first camping holiday a success!

Disliked: No complaints about the site whatsoever. We had some noisy neighbours one night, but weā€™re guessing they were spoken to as it didnā€™t happen again! We were sad to hear that the campsite it closing after this season, as weā€™d hoped to make it a regular site. We wish all the team the very best; thank you so much for all that you do.
