Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Beautiful setting with loads of space to spread out. A real haven of tranquility.

Disliked: In the field behind the carpark there is a noticeable and loud humming noise all night which seems to come from a nearby pumping station - so take ear plugs! Also, showers are only for the brave as both feet and shoulders are open to the elements and water is warm ish at best.

Primitive grass tent campsite (small, four person)

Liked: - Nice lake view - Good location

Disliked: - Awful facilities - 4 showers onsite, only one works but no signage to say this. One worked for 20 seconds and then turned off and didn’t work again. Everyone queues for one shower. - 5 men’s toilets, one permanently locked and two without locks, so you’re down to 2 toilets. - Simple things like no hooks in shower/toilets so you cannot hang any clothes/bags/towels etc. It’s clear the owners/management have never used the facilities themselves. - Toilets dirty and smell. - Toilets and shower have a small door which covers torso, legs and head visible over the top so not very private. - No light in toilet block. - No staff/reception area where you can find anyone. - If you don’t get a lake view, the camping area is very squashed and crowded so that side didn’t look enjoyable. - Car remains in car park and not next to your tent which could be inconvenient for some. - Can hear road noise. - Expensive for what you get, so not good value for money.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: We were in a day/campervan with an awning. Lovely scenic location Clean and tidy Nature based - lovely central lake. Wild camping feel being able to pitch up more or less where you please. Basic facilities available - well maintained and clean. Good, swift communication prior to arrival as we were a day later than expected.

Disliked: Not so much dislikes but improvement suggestions: Clearer signage approaching from Edgefield direction required. Clearer check-in procedure as no fixed reception onsite or guidance about where to go once your turn off main road. Didn't see any staff. I felt it was on the expensive side given the level facilities available. Bird scarer in close by field disturbing the peace and upsetting dogs.

Primitive grass tent campsite (small, four person)

Liked: Nothing to like unfortunately

Disliked: Very over priced. I Arrived and no meet and great. I had rang in advance to ask if I would be safe and was reassured it was a busy family campsite. I was the only camper when I Arrived!. Felt very worried about sleeping. There is very little lighting after dark. I cut my holiday short unfortunately

Primitive grass campervan campsite (no awning)

Liked: The campsite itself is lovely and peaceful, with a wood and lake in the centre. Toilets and shower facilities were good. The area surrounding area is great, with Holt and other nice places a short drive away. The staff were also really friendly and helpful. Feels like nearly wild camping. We loved it and would definitely come back.

Primitive grass campervan campsite (no awning)

Liked: The lovely location by the lake under the trees for the campervans. Great addition to our stay to be able to use fire pits! Very good location, very close to Holt and a good base to explore Norfolk

Disliked: There was a very loud bird scarer in a nearby field that started early in the morning!

Local attractions

Nature-lovers may get to spot owls and fallow deer in the woods around the campsite, and families can take binoculars to watch for rare bird species on nature walks in Holt Country Park (five minutes’ walk). For more animal sightings, visit the grey seal colonies at Weybourne or Blakeney Point (both 15 minutes’ drive) in autumn and winter. North Norfolk beaches include Sheringham (15 minutes) for rock pooling on its pebble beach, lively Hunstanton (45 minutes) with all its family amusements, and Wells-next-the-Sea (25 minutes), popular for its sandy beach backed by colourful beach huts. Victorian Cromer (20 minutes) is known for family entertainment on the pier and Banksy’s renowned ‘Great British Spraycation’. There’s culture by the bucketload too. Anyone with an interest in military history may like to take a turn around the weaponry and vehicles at Muckleburgh Military Collection (15 minutes). There are priceless antiques and artworks to be seen at Palladian-style Holkham Hall (half an hour), or you can pretend you’re royalty for the day with a nose around the palatial apartments at Sandringham Estate (40 minutes), and afterwards let the kids (and any dogs) have a run in the wooded parkland.
