Campsite

  • Simple rural site in Staffordshire, on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 10-minute drive from Alton Towers and 20 minutes from Dovedale
  • Football and volleyball nets; lots of space; a minute from the pub
Family rift? One lot wants rides and slides and attractions, the others long for walks in the wilderness and watery outdoors stuff? Reconcile all warring parties at Rue Hill Campsite, a simple and friendly site in the Staffordshire countryside, where (almost) every wish can be granted. This special spot is surrounded by green fields on the edge of the Peak District, a minute’s drive from the village of Cauldon Low and about 10 minutes’ drive from Alton Towers. Space is the word here: there’s a wide grassy field to stay in with plenty of room for running about at full pelt too, as well as more organised activities around the football and volleyball nets. Barbecues are welcome; hire firepits with logs, sticks and paper from the team for the simple pleasures of gathering round the flames, warming fingers, sizzling things on sticks or singing lusty songs (reasonably quietly). It’s a minute’s drive to a pub with food and 15 minutes to a nicely varied selection of shops, supermarkets, takeaways and other eateries at Ashbourne.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: This was a very nice and welcoming site. We has booked a motorhome pitch but because our son and his family were in a large tent they arranged it so we could be next to them and supplied EHU. On 2 night we hired there fire pit which was lovely sitting outside roasting marshmallows. The facilities were of normal standard clean and tidy. The hosts were very pleasant and friendly and couldn't do enough for everyone. We would throughly recommend this site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Superb stay, lovely clean quite site, the facilities were imaculate, love the music playing in the toilet/shower rooms, gave a real sense of tranquility, toilet rolls were soooo soft😂. Hosts were very friendly and informative, love the relaxed atmosphere, great location for Alton Towers and walking in the district, cannot fault and recommend enough....was just perfect for what we needed for our stay.

Disliked: Local (distant noise from quarry throughout the night) although you will get this from anywhere in the area.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Really nice place, the owners were very attentive. Half of the field is on a hill, if your staying on no electric tent field. Well spaced out pitches, although when the bank holiday rolled around, the pitches we have other tents almost on top of us, so not ideal. But it has a great shower/toilet block. Very close to Alton Towers, and pretty well located for anything else you need in the area. Ultimately we would stay here again definitely, but just not on a bank holiday.

Local attractions

For those who like to be hurtled about at great speeds and heights, happiness awaits: it’s 10 minutes to the assorted excitements of Alton Towers, and for those who haven't quite graduated to the big league, an array of rides aimed at younger clientele are at Gulliver’s Kingdom, 40 minutes away. For active stuff in the outdoors, make for the Dovedale valley, 20 minutes away for walks and rides through the fab surrounds of the southern Peak District. If you prefer a splash of water with your adventures, wend your way over to Carsington Water (25 minutes) for kayaking, sailing and fishing as well as walks and bike rides round the reservoir. For more urban antics, meanwhile, sidle over to Stoke Skatepark (40 minutes), a mecca for concrete acrobats. Penchant for the past? The Churnet Valley Steam Railway is 10 minutes' drive away, while the fine old stately piles of Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House are within 45 minutes. It's a similar distance to the Crich Tramway Museum and the Heights of Abraham, a Victorian pleasure ground reached by cable car from Matlock Bath, with a fossil museum, caverns and acres of upland parkland. For animal fans, there’s horse trekking from the Beaver Hall equestrian centre, 10 minutes away, and very close by, encounters with lemurs, penguins, wallabies and pygmy goats at the Peak Wildlife Park.
