  • Basic camping barns five minutes’ drive from Leek in Staffordshire
  • Alton Towers 20 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth House 45 minutes
  • Simple communal kitchenettes, firepits and metered electricity
A practical choice for budget campers and long-distance walkers (and their dogs), Leek Camping Barns are found at 19th-century, pink-sandstone Padwick Farm, five minutes’ drive from the traditional Staffordshire market town of Leek and the edge of the Peak District National Park. Staying here gives you far-reaching views over medieval Bradnop village and Morridge Top on the untamed Staffordshire Moorlands. Frills are few. What is provided with the accommodation: a standard electric cooker, fridge-freezer, microwave, stove, water heater and some cooking utensils. Electricity for cooking and charging devices is metered, and there’s also a metered shower in the farm’s former dairy. Other handy amenities include off-road parking, covered outdoor areas with woodburning stoves to cosy up around, communal firepits for barbecues on warmer days and compost loos. What you’ll need to bring with you: pillows and sleeping bags appropriate to the season, all personal items, dishcloths and tea towels. If you want to abandon your car and strike out on foot, the site is within half an hour’s walk of Leek for stocking up on food and essentials, or investigating its pubs and cafés.

Top Barn bunkhouse

Liked: What an amazing place to stay. Alison was very welcoming and friendly and gave us tips on places to visit. There were lots of little touches which we really appreciated, including providing washing up liquid and setting up the campfire and log burner for us. We stayed in the top barn bunkhouse and it was very cosy and had everything we needed including a full size cooker. We loved having a campfire and the private undercover outside area was a great shelter if weather was inclement, complete with it's own log burner. The toilets were kept very clean daily throughout our stay. The views were beautiful and it was within walking distance of the town of Leek but also peaceful at the same time due to it's location. A lovely place to stay if you want a quiet, peaceful getaway which was perfect for our needs. We will return and highly recommend it.

Disliked: nothing

Local attractions

Spend time discovering the charms of Leek (five minutes’ drive), with its medieval marketplace, half-timbered houses and strolls along the River Churnet. It’s the gateway to long-distance hikes in the Peak District National Park (also five minutes), and climbs up the rugged Roaches, Ramshaw Rocks and Hen Cloud (all 10 minutes) gritstone formations. Long-distance walkers can try The Manifold Way. Gentler options for families including the way-marked trails in Ladderedge Country Park (both 10 minutes), hiking, running or cycling in forested countryside and on shoreline trails around Rudyard Lake or Tittesworth Reservoir (both 15 minutes), where you can also go sailing, canoeing and fishing. If the kids are with you and you’re staying put for a couple of days, Alton Towers Resort (20 minutes) rewards a trip with adrenaline rides for all the family, rollercoasters and live shows featuring the Teletubbies for younger offspring. Add a bit of culture into your holiday mix with a visit to stately, 17th-century Chatsworth House (45 minutes) for tours of the mansion and explorations of the extensive parkland.
