  • Calm wild camping site on the outskirts of the Shropshire Hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Pontesbury Hill and 20 minutes to Shrewsbury
  • Washing machine, charging points and water provided; pubs nearby
Wild is the way of Windy Corner Campsite on the outskirts of the Shropshire Hills. A calm nature-oriented site with a brook and comfortable facilities, here, hilly walks may be on the horizon – quite literally, as the site has views over Pontesbury Hill (10 minutes’ drive away for the scenic hiking spot). Nature’s at the forefront of this site but that doesn’t mean it compromises on facilities, as there are showers, toilets, dishwashing facilities and a washing machine for those extra-mucky days. You’ll also have access to charging points and fresh water. While there are horses and a pet lamb on the site, birdsong is also a common addition from the animal world. There’s a calm brook and laidback walks directly from the site so that you can get stuck into the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and Devil’s Chair half an hour’s drive away and Eastridge Wood 20 minutes away. You might want to back up your batteries with some filling food before you set off on your wanders. Handily, the site is around 45 minutes’ walk away from Pontesbury village, where there’s a chemist, shop, butchers and bakery, plus pubs and a Chinese and Indian restaurant so you may either top up your snack store or get a good meal in.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Wild camping, the little river and rural area are stunning. Nice to be able to have fires with free wood

Disliked: Just the british weather made the area muddy, the hill down is daunting

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Scenery was stunning, lovely and quiet. Nice to see animals roaming free and in the fields, even if the goats were mischievous, which was hilarious. Host and family very welcoming and friendly. Amenities for a cuppa when you run out of gas 🤣. Will definitely be back for another break next year. Gill & Tee

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A lovely welcoming campsite with such lovely hosts! Remote environment surrounded by woodlands but not too far walk to town for some lunch. You have the choice between wild camping near the brook or you can choose “civilisation” and camp up on the field. Tea, coffee facilities and toaster in an outer house where you can sit and relax if you don’t want to just stay in the tent. Toilets and a small shower block available. We will be staying again and trying the wild camping by the brook.

Disliked: No Wi-Fi but it was nice without it, appreciated the place more.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A relaxing and laid back campsite. Nestled into the bottom of Pontsebury hill it manages to be both seculded and accessible in the same moment. Not far from Shrewsbury or the amenities of the local village. We enjoyed the almost wild camping experience in the valley bottom. Pitching next to the charming Pontesford Brook was a real treat. We saw Kingfishers flashing by and Grey Wagtails along the banks of the brook. Also spotted were bats hunting at dusk and a spectacular array of stars after dark. A real treat to be able to enjoy a proper campfire in such a lovely environment. A short walk down stream rewards you with a beautiful little waterfall and some lovely old yew trees clinging to a rocky outcrop. Mel is a very generous host and made us feel very welcome and at ease. There is a host of ancillary resources, including, communal fridge, dish washing facilities as well as a small shower block. We will definitely be back for more almost wild camping fun and to see how the site progress over time. Fantastic value for money and a lovely bases to explore all that Shropshire has to offer
